She shared one of her most profound memories about Presley during a 2023 fan event during Elvis Week. This is the world’s largest annual gathering of his fans, spanning nine days and culminating in a candlelight vigil honoring his passing on August 16, 1977.
Thompson recalled the more intimate moments she and Presley shared, when it was just the two of them alone. She revealed that kissing Elvis was one of her favorite memories.

“If you take two big fluffy marshmallows, put them together, and the sweetness and the softness that they are, and you just kiss those marshmallows, that’s the closest thing I could come to imagining what it would be like kissing Elvis. Because he did have the softest and sweetest lips,: she revealed.
Thompson added, “He was so wonderfully affectionate that I know how lucky I am and how blessed to have those memories and to be able to close my eyes and imagine those kisses. And he always had good breath; I don’t know how; he always always had good breath.”
According to The Commercial Appeal, Thompson and Presley met for the first time in 1972. The Memphis newspaper spoke to the songwriter and actress about her memoir, A Little Thing Called Life: On Loving Elvis Presley, Bruce Jenner, and Songs in Between, in 2016.

"He burst through the side door dressed as Dracula — flared pants, black cape with red lining and sunglasses on," she said. "It was July 6, 1972, and it was sweltering hot in Memphis. So humid and hot. I was kind of taken aback by how he was dressed."
"And kind of sauntered over in this Elvis-esque manner," Thompson continued. "I had no designs on him. I was very cordial as Miss Tennessee, (with the) beauty queen smile fixed on my face."
"I was a little pert: 'To what do we owe this honor? We're kind of dressed as Dracula tonight. Well, why are you dressed like that?' Elvis said, 'Honey, I just stepped from an air-conditioned car to an air-conditioned building.'"

That moment kicked off a relationship that would ultimately last for four and one-half years, until 1976. Thompson admitted, "I did not break up with him because I didn't love him anymore. I'll probably love him till the day I die. In fact, I'm sure I will. There's always a place in my heart for him. But I wanted more for my life. I wanted to be a mother. Live a more normal life," she concluded.
