ROCHESTER, N.Y. — Amazon’s big summer sale started today and runs through Friday, and at least 14 other retailers are having big summer sales to compete with Amazon, including Walmart, Target and Best Buy.
News10NBC consumer reporter Deanna Dewberry found that even if you don’t have Amazon Prime, you may be able to find the same deal at another retailer.
During the Prime Day sale, the Amazon warehouse looks like Black Friday in June, and for good reasons. Many discounts are deep and the deals are plentiful. Marc Heintzman, an Amazon spokesman, snagged a quiet corner of a Dallas warehouse to chat with Dewberry
“Prime Day is one of our biggest shopping events of the year. Literally millions of deals, which sounds like an incredible number but it’s true,” Heintzman said.
Traditionally some of the best deals have been on Amazon products. One example is a Blink video doorbell with four cameras, an Amazon security system that was on sale for 74 percent off Tuesday morning and was selling for percent off, by Tuesday evening – still a good deal. But not every deal is a good deal.
Dewberry found a beach coverup selling for $17.99, 54 percent off. Using Amazon’s new AI shopping tool called Alexa for Shopping, she checked the price history and found that the coverup has never sold for more than $20. So, the sale price was actually only 10 percent off. By Tuesday evening, Amazon had removed that third party seller’s deceptively-priced product.
“There are countless deals across the electronics category. Whether they’re Amazon devices or other brand names,” Heintzman said.
On Tuesday, an Apple Watch Series 11 was on sale for $279 on Amazon. Dewberry asked Alexa for Shopping for a price history and learned $279 is indeed the lowest price. But if you don’t have Prime, no worries. With a quick Google search, she learned Target and Walmart have the watch on sale for the same price.
For those who haven’t used Alexa for Shopping, you’ll find the tool in the upper left hand corner on Amazon’s website. Tap that and ask it anything, from finding products to checking price histories.
Dewberry tested Alexa’s price histories against Camel Camel Camel, an independent price checking tool. Every time the history was the same, even when revealing deals that were not good deals.
