Debbie Cox, a resident at Waterford Terrace Retirement Community, met her husband while dancing.“I danced all my life, and I can’t dance now, but I remember what it felt like,” Cox said, dressed in her finest leggings and blue blouse. Cox said her favorite type of dancing is the West Coast swing. The Waterford Terrace Retirement Community hosted its annual “Senior Prom” on June 19. Dozens of residents showed up in their finest attire for a night of dancing, refreshments and the crowning of the prom king and queen.Senior prom at Waterford has been a tradition for more than a decade. A spokesperson for Waterford Retirement Community said the annual gala brings joy and connection to older adults, some of whom are over 100 years old. The dance also encourages healthy aging and is something residents look forward to each year.Usually hosted on the roof, this year’s prom was on the third floor of the building. Residents said the music and dancing were all the more fun because of the addition of the DJ, who was spinning the hits from decades past.The seniors sipped refreshments and snacked as they reminisced about the dances of their youth.“It reminds me of when I was younger,” resident Niola Melucci said on why she attended the event.“I love to dance. I love the music,” Janice Farr said. “It was a highlight [for me] growing up.”The night ended with the crowning of the prom king and queen. Residents Connie and Larry Morse said it was a huge surprise to them.
