Over the last three decades, Pixar has gifted the world with a huge variety of wonderful animated films – with everything from Monsters Inc to Ratatouille to Coco finding an audiences of devoted fans.
But it's the studio's very first film – Toy Story – that has proved the most enduring of all. In the time since the original movie's release all the way back in 1995, there have now been five films in the main series in addition to spin-off Lightyear and a huge variety of TV specials and shorts.
The most recent entry, Toy Story 5, has just landed in UK cinemas, and although it has perhaps received a slightly more lukewarm critical reception than some of the other entries, it's once again gone down a storm with long-term fans and looks set to became another major hit.
With that in mind, you might be wondering if there are any concrete plans to move ahead with a sixth entry in the franchise at this point. Read on for everything you need to know about a potential Toy Story 6.
Will there be a Toy Story 6?
At this point there has been no confirmation about a sixth entry in the franchise. But given how reliable the series has been in terms of box office figures for Pixar – and the studio's clear preference for sequels in recent years – it seems very likely this won't be the last we see of the beloved toys.
Speaking exclusively to Radio Times, director Andrew Stanton said he was open to the possibility of further films, explaining that he could "imagine anything if it's done well".
He added: "The thing specifically about these movies that work is because we've allowed time to pass, so as long as we are honest with what feels natural to time passing for characters, whether they're human or toys, it'll be viable."
He said that from the beginning, the process had always been to "follow the lives of the kids that are owning these toys, because every kid’s a little different".
View Green Video on the source websiteAnd he continued: "There are so many facets to childhood that haven’t been touched on, that I think you could keep it going the right way, for the right reasons."
Both Tom Hanks and Tim Allen – who have, of course, voiced Woody and Buzz in every film so far – also suggested they'd be keen on returning once again, albeit only if it's "worthy of Toy Story".
"If it wasn't good, they wouldn't do it," said Allen, with Hanks adding: "They should just call this the next Toy Story, as opposed to putting a number on it."
When we hear any more concrete information about plans for a sixth film, we'll update this page accordingly.
When might a potential Toy Story 6 be released?
Given nothing is official about another entry at this point, we can naturally only go on guesswork.
There's not necessarily much to go on when we look at the gaps between the other entries in the franchise. There were four years between the first two films, and then an eleven year wait before Toy Story 3, with the fourth entry following and other nine years later and then a further seven years for Toy Story 5.
With that in mind, we'd expect at least another few years before another instalment, especially when we consider that the creatives seem determined not to just push ahead with another film just for the sake of it, only if they land on a story which they are happy with.
The next Pixar film will be Gatto – the studio's first 2D animated feature – which is due for release on 5 March 2027, which will be followed by Incredibles 3 on 16 June 2028.
Meanwhile, other films in development at the studio include Coco 2, a third Monsters Inc film and a project called Ono Ghost Market, which is reportedly centred around a supernatural bazaar where the living and dead interact.
