State Department of Agriculture warns of rising Asian longhorned tick detections

ROCHESTER, N.Y. — The State Department of Agriculture is warning people about Asian longhorned ticks. The office says detections of Asian longhorned ticks are on the rise, threatening livestock herds across New York.

The invasive pest was first identified in the U.S. back in 2017 in New Jersey and has been moving its way north.

Officials say the ticks can cause significant blood loss, leading to anemia, reduced milk production, and in extreme cases death.

According to the office, livestock producers can take various preventative measures to protect their animals. This includes ensuring introduced animals are tick-free, screening new cattle for theileriosis before introducing them to the herd, monitoring herds, making informed treatment decisions, and using integrated pasture management strategies.

It is also recommended livestock producers apply approved acaricide products to livestock to help control the ticks.
