We’ve been waiting a long time to see what the Chicago Cubs would unveil at Wrigley Field to commemorate the 2016 World Series champion team. Obviously the flags have been raised, and that was something important, but we knew some kind of monument would eventually arrive, too. The 10th anniversary season certainly made a lot of sense.
The Cubs announced that the monument would be unveiled on July 18 as part of an anniversary celebration that will see members of the 2016 team return to Wrigley Field, and we can now share some renderings from the Cubs. As you can see, the team has once again done a great job blending a new element more or less seamlessly into the area – this time, and archway-style monument at the west side of Gallagher Way. The monument is called Champions Gate, given its dual role as a championship celebration and also a gate to the park area.
The Cubs could’ve gone with another statue, though that would’ve been a little limiting, given that it would almost necessarily cut some of the players out of the equation (the iconic pictures from Game Seven include only a very small handful of the contributors, and even that would be only if you incorporated multiple shots). That’s the kind of thing I had been envisioning, but I think this may be the better approach over time; not to mention this helps preserve the special/specific nature of the statues at Wrigley Field.
Champions Gate is pretty clearly being erected in celebration of the 2016 World Series team – the one to which we living folks are most attached – but I appreciate that it celebrates the 1907 and 1908 teams, too. It is also not lost on me that there would be ways to celebrate additional teams on the monument should the Cubs, you know, ever do it again.
From the Cubs:
Champions Gate includes several design elements intended to reflect the Cubs and Wrigley Field.
On top of the archway there is a large bronze medallion that honors our World Championship titles. The medallion design was directly inspired by the commemorative 2016 World Champions logo that the Cubs used in the aftermath of the World Series. There is bronzed ivy on either side of the medallion which matches our signature Boston ivy that covers the walls of the outfield. The top of the metal truss consists of a diamond pattern that’s found on the ballpark’s iconic metal gates. There are discreet “W” details along the bottom of the truss that reflect our light towers and our history of raising the W flag. The truss also features our three world championship years in cast bronze numbers. “2016” is positioned at the center, in recognition of breaking a 108-year championship drought. The brick pillars are inlaid with bronze plaques that list the players and manager from each of the World Series championship teams.More renderings of Champions Gate, which arrives officially on July 18:
