1970 No. 1 Hit, Released by Iconic Supergroup, Ranked Among Greatest Albums of All Time

Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young, the legendary group behind the smash hit album Déjà Vu, continue to resonate with today’s generation after earning renewed recognition for their iconic record.

Composed of David Crosby of The Byrds, Stephen Stills of Buffalo Springfield, Graham Nash of The Hollies and Neil Young of Buffalo Springfield, the band saw its album named by Rolling Stone as one of the greatest albums of all time.

With its list of 500 albums, spanning different genres, eras, bands and solo artists, the rankings unveiled the most influential, popular and timeless acts in music history, voted on by hundreds of music experts, critics, producers, industry professionals and more.

While Marvin Gaye’s What’s Going On, The Beach Boys’ Pet Sounds and Joni Mitchell’s Blue secured the top three spots, Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young made it to No. 220, all thanks to their 1970 studio album Déjà Vu.

Described as a “rock & roll powerhouse,” the record was the folk-rock supergroup’s first-ever album after recruiting Young to their star-studded lineup.

From trio to quartet, they released a number of hit songs, including the band’s cover of Joni Mitchell’s "Woodstock," which became their highest-charting single of 1970, followed by "Teach Your Children," a single written by Graham Nash, the pop-folk hit “Our House” and another standout song, “Ohio,” with all four tracks entering the Billboard Hot 100 chart.

With its number of fan-favorite tracks, their debut album as a quartet reached No. 1 on the Billboard 200.

Nash credited the Buffalo Springfield frontman for his significant contribution to the album’s success.

“Neil’s a strange energy. He brings a darker edge and a more realistic edge to our music…It did fit, though. Déjà Vu is a pretty fun album,” he told Music Radar as reported by Classical Album Sundays.

The album sold over eight million copies worldwide, further cementing their status as one of the most influential groups of the 1970s.

As Nash continues to recall, Déjà Vu had a different feel compared to their previous album as a trio.

“During the first album, we were all in love,” he told the outlet, referencing their romantic relationship with respective partners back then. “David was in love with Christine [Hinton], Stephen was in love with Judy Collins, I was in love with Joni [Mitchell]. Everything was rosy and fantastic. By ‘Déjà Vu’, Joni and I had split up, Stephen and Judy had split up, and Christine had just been killed. It was all dark.”

The former member of The Hollies revealed that “Our House” was a bittersweet reflection of his time living with Mitchell in their home in Laurel Canyon.
