Russell: Hamilton ‘is going to be a real threat’ in title battle

George Russell admits that Lewis Hamilton’s resurgence with Ferrari has added an exciting new dimension to the 2026 Formula 1 title race, with the Mercedes driver conceding his former teammate has become a genuine contender after a stunning run of form.

Hamilton’s long-awaited breakthrough victory for Ferrari in Spain capped a remarkable turnaround that has transformed the complexion of the championship.

Following podium finishes in Monaco and Canada, the seven-time world champion has surged into second place in the standings, leapfrogging Russell and positioning himself as the closest challenger to Mercedes leader Kimi Antonelli.

For Russell, watching Hamilton succeed after his headline-grabbing switch from Mercedes to Ferrari has been both impressive and understandable.

    Ferrari gamble paying off

“It was a big, bold move to join Ferrari, and to see it now paying off for him is very special to see given the magnitude of the decision,” Russell commented.

“And, yeah, he’s going to be a real threat… Hopefully it doesn’t continue for too long.”

Hamilton’s rise has coincided with Ferrari introducing major upgrades that have significantly boosted the team's competitiveness.

The seven-time world champion, who spent much of the previous ground-effect era struggling to find comfort with his machinery, appears rejuvenated under Formula 1’s new regulations and increasingly at ease within Ferrari’s environment.

The momentum has helped him move nine points clear of Russell in the championship, although both drivers remain some distance behind Antonelli, who continues to lead the standings.

    Focus remains unchanged

Despite Hamilton’s resurgence and Ferrari’s rapid progress, Russell insists he is not altering his mindset as the season enters a crucial phase.

“Well, at the moment Lewis is obviously ahead of me in the championship,” Russell said. “We need to see across the course of a couple of races.

“They did bring a big upgrade and I think the development slope is so steep at the moment for all of the teams. Whoever is going to be bringing those upgrades earliest is going to be taking a step forward.

“We saw it with McLaren in Miami, having a really strong weekend, and then ourselves and Ferrari have taken a step forward thereafter.

“So honestly, the approach doesn’t change for me. I’m just looking to maximise my weekends. It hasn’t been the case recently and see where it takes us.”

Russell’s comments reflect a growing belief across the paddock that – despite Antonelli’s overwhelming win rate – the championship battle is becoming increasingly unpredictable.

With Ferrari’s upgrades delivering immediate results, Mercedes still leading the standings, and development races intensifying among the front-runners, Hamilton’s return to winning ways has injected fresh energy into a title fight that suddenly looks far more open than it did just a few races ago.
