A Georgia man was arrested and faces multiple charges after he allegedly picked up a runaway Lake County girl he had been corresponding with.
“This type of case is a parent’s worst nightmare,” Lake County Sheriff John Idleburg said in a statement. “Our Criminal Investigations Division took this case seriously and worked tirelessly from the moment the girl was reported missing until she was safely located. While there will undoubtedly be a long road to recovery and healing, I am grateful the victim was found safe and is physically okay.”
According to the Lake County Sheriff’s Department, deputies were called to a home in unincorporated Gurnee on Saturday morning after a girl had run away from home in the middle of the night.
Deputies were unable to get a signal on the girl’s phone, but ultimately discovered she had been communicating with a 24-year-old Georgia man.
An investigation revealed the man, identified as Jordy Alexis Fuerte Perez, had made plans to drive from Georgia to pick the girl up, with police alleging he was seeking a “romantic relationship” with the victim in the case.
Deputies determined what type of vehicle Fuerte Perez owned and used public safety cameras to locate the vehicle at a forest preserve in suburban Libertyville. Deputies apprehended the suspect in the parking lot and were able to take the girl into protective custody.
Police do not believe the victim was physically harmed, but she was transported to the Lake County Children’s Advocacy Center, according to authorities.
The suspect has been charged with two counts of solicitation of child pornography and one count of unlawful possession of cocaine, and additional charges are likely in the case, according to police.
