Steady, soaking rains are expected to make for a very soggy Sunday across the Chicago area and could lead to localized flash flooding in some parts of the region, according to the National Weather Service.
Widespread rainfall is expected to hit the area in the late morning and continue throughout the day and into the evening as showers move across the region from the southwest to the northeast.
Soaking downpours could cause pooling on roads and in parking lots, NWS warned. Lightning strikes are also possible during the storm.
“The best chances for isolated storms and localized flash flooding may focus south of Interstate 80. If you come across flooded roadways, remember: turn around, don’t drown!” NWS said in a post on social media.
In areas south of I-80, torrential rainfall that could flood roads, low-lying areas and basements is expected alongside strong, gusty winds.
LaSalle County is under a flood warning until Tuesday afternoon as the upper Illinois River is at risk of flooding.
“A Flood Warning means water levels above flood stage are imminent or may already be occurring. Persons along rivers and streams in the warned area should take immediate precautions to protect life and property,” NWS said in the warning.
Looking ahead to next week, below average temperatures are expected throughout the week. In the middle of the week there’s also another chance for storms.
