ROCHESTER, N.Y. — A high-level basketball league featuring college and professional players from the Rochester area starts this weekend.
The Keyz to the City Rec League, which gives local players a chance to compete against each other. Edison Tech will host the games this summer.
“It gives us an opportunity to put on for our home city and definitely showcase our talents in front of all of our friends, our family,” said Zekiah Owens, who played at Spencerport High and in International Pro Leagues.
“It gives us an opportunity to stay in shape, sharpen our craft,” said Christian Simmons, who played at SOTA and in International Pro Leagues. “But then also gives the fans something they want to see on a nice Saturday afternoon.”
The league features players who competed at the D3 level, internationally and even in the NBA. Jalen Pickett, who just finished his third year in the NBA, will play in the league.
“When you get all these talented players on the same court, you get a lot of dogs in the same room, there’s gonna be a lot of barking,” Owens said. “There’s gonna be a lot of competition and a lot of tenacity in there. Me personally, I love the competition.”
“You put so many alpha males in one building, only one can come out on top,” Simmons said. “Even though you have somebody as good as Pick, who has his own team, his team and he will still get his behind whooped by our team. It’s always smoke.”
Players aren’t in it for anything other than good competition and bragging rights.
“At the end of the day it’s all love,” Simmons said. “We might talk junk, talk crazy. But at the end of the day we still might go out and get lunch or dinner right after. It’s all for the love of the competition.”
The league starts Saturday and runs through late August.
“Our team is different,” Simmons said. “We’re gonna smack everybody. Respectfully.”
