House of the DragonSeason 3 is nearly here. The show is a sprawling ensemble and as the Dance of the Dragons continues to move into the phase of all-out war, the list of combatants is only growing larger.
The HBO Game of Thrones prequel returns for Season 3 on June 21, with Team Black and Team Green heading toward some of the bloodiest battles in Targaryen history. After Season 2 ended with armies marching, dragons preparing for battle, and Aegon fleeing King’s Landing, the new season will bring back many of the show’s major players.
The House of the Dragon Season 3 cast includes returning stars Emma D'Arcy, Olivia Cooke, Matt Smith, Ewan Mitchell and Tom Glynn-Carney, along with new cast members playing key figures from George R.R. Martin’s Fire & Blood.

Emma D'Arcy as Rhaenyra Targaryen

Emma D'Arcy returns as Rhaenyra Targaryen, King Viserys' chosen heir and the leader of Team Black. After Aegon was crowned in her place, Rhaenyra spent Season 2 trying to hold her claim together while deciding how far she was willing to go to win the Iron Throne.
Heading into Season 3, Rhaenyra appears ready to take a more aggressive approach. With new dragonriders on her side and Alicent offering her a path into King's Landing, she may be closer than ever to the throne. However, the war is also growing larger, bloodier and harder to control.
Outside of House of the Dragon, they are known for their work in Truth Seekers, Mothering Sundayand will appear in the Tom Cruisefilm Digger in 2026.
Matt Smith as Daemon Targaryen

Matt Smith returns as Daemon Targaryen, Rhaenyra's husband, uncle and one of Team Black's most dangerous allies. A skilled warrior and dragonrider, Daemon spent much of Season 2 away from Dragonstone after his role in the Blood and Cheese murder damaged his relationship with Rhaenyra.
Heading into Season 3, Daemon has reaffirmed his loyalty to Rhaenyra after his strange and unsettling time at Harrenhal. With the Riverlands becoming a major battleground, his army and his dragon Caraxes could be crucial to Team Black's next moves.
Outside of House of the Dragon, Smith is best known for playing the Eleventh Doctor in Doctor Who and Prince Philip in The Crown.
Olivia Cooke as Alicent Hightower

Olivia Cooke returns as Alicent Hightower, the former queen and mother of Aegon, Helaena, Aemond and Daeron. After helping place Aegon on the Iron Throne, Alicent spent Season 2 realizing how little control she actually had over the war she helped begin.
Heading into Season 3, Alicent is politically isolated. Aemond has pushed her aside, Aegon has fled King’s Landing, and her attempt to make peace with Rhaenyra may already be falling apart. Her priority now appears to be protecting Helaena and surviving the consequences of Team Green’s choices.
Outside of House of the Dragon, Cooke is known for Bates Motel, Slow Horses, and Sound of Metal.
Ewan Mitchell as Aemond Targaryen

Ewan Mitchell returns as Aemond Targaryen, Alicent’s second son, rider of Vhagar and the ruthless Prince Regent of Team Green. After Aegon was badly injured at the Battle of Rook’s Rest, Aemond took control in King’s Landing and pushed his mother out of power.
Heading into Season 3, Aemond is one of the most dangerous figures in the war. With Vhagar at his command and Aegon out of the capital, he has the power to steer Team Green into an even more brutal phase of the Dance of the Dragons.

Tom Glynn-Carney as Aegon II Targaryen

Tom Glynn-Carney returns as Aegon II Targaryen, Alicent’s eldest son and the king Team Green placed on the Iron Throne instead of Rhaenyra. In Season 2, Aegon struggled to be taken seriously by his council before flying into battle at Rook’s Rest, where he was badly burned and injured.
Heading into Season 3, Aegon is no longer in King’s Landing. Larys helped him escape the capital in the Season 2 finale, warning that his life was in danger whether Team Green won or lost the war. His survival could complicate Alicent’s attempt to hand the city to Rhaenyra.
Outside of House of the Dragon, Glynn-Carney is known for Dunkirk and The King.
Phia Saban as Helaena Targaryen

Phia Saban returns as Helaena Targaryen, Aegon’s sister-wife and queen, whose son Jaehaerys was murdered by Blood and Cheese in Season 2. Helaena spent much of the season grieving, while her strange visions continued to suggest she understands more about the war than those around her.
Heading into Season 3, Helaena remains in King’s Landing under Aemond’s rule. Her relationship with her brother appears increasingly strained, especially after she tells him that he will not survive the war.
Outside of House of the Dragon, Saban is known for The Last Kingdom.

Heading into Season 3, Jace remains one of Rhaenyra’s most important allies, but his position is complicated by the rise of the Dragonseeds. With new riders joining their cause and the Battle of the Gullet looming, Jace may have to prove his value in a war that is quickly becoming more dangerous.

Bethany Antonia as Baela Targaryen

Heading into Season 3, Baela remains one of Team Black’s most valuable young players. With Jace preparing for a more dangerous phase of the war and the Velaryon fleet facing a major threat, Baela may be pulled closer to the front lines.

Heading into Season 3, Rhaena may finally become a dragonrider. If she can claim the dragon she discovered, it could change her role in the war and give Team Black another powerful weapon.

Abubakar Salim as Alyn of Hull

Heading into Season 3, Alyn is positioned to become even more important as Corlys’ fleet faces the threat of the Triarchy. With the Velaryon line shaken by Rhaenys’ death, Alyn may have to prove he can carry the family name into the next stage of the war.

Clinton Liberty as Addam of Hull

Heading into Season 3, Addam’s new bond with Seasmoke makes him one of Rhaenyra’s most valuable assets. As the war expands and the Battle of the Gullet approaches, Addam could be pulled directly into the fight for control of the seas.

Heading into Season 3, Criston appears shaken by what the war has become. After Rook’s Rest and the horrors of marching through the Crownlands, he may continue to question the faith and purpose that once drove him, even as he remains one of Team Green’s most important military figures.

Rhys Ifans returns as Otto Hightower, Alicent’s father and the seasoned political operator who helped place Aegon on the Iron Throne. In Season 2, Otto was removed as Hand of the King after clashing with Aegon over how to handle the war.
Heading into Season 3, Otto’s future is unclear. At the end of Season 2, he was briefly seen imprisoned in a cage, suggesting that one of Team Green’s most experienced strategists may be far from the center of power when the war resumes.
