EastEnders star Joshua Vaughan has spoken out on the future of his character's messy love life, after a bombshell confession gave Jasmine (Indeyarna Donaldson-Holness) a birthday party to remember – for all the wrong reasons.
Vaughan plays Jasmine's twin brother, Josh, who began a secret romance with Oscar (Pierre Counihan-Moullier) shortly after arriving in Walford; initially unaware that he also had a thing going on with his sister.
The incredibly awkward love triangle ended, inevitably, in disaster during a recent episode, where Jasmine's birthday party brought together the trio and the truth came pouring out. Ultimately, it was Josh who bit the bullet with a startling admission.
Vaughan spoke to Digital Spy's Inside Soap in the wake of the dramatic scenes, joking that he'd been busy lately defending his character's actions to anyone who would listen.
"It was just too much," he reflected. "I'm Josh's biggest lawyer right now, and I sympathise with him because there's nothing but guilt and pretence since he arrived in Walford."
"It was seeing his sister have the most special moment of her life and knowing that he was with her boyfriend the night before… he had no choice but to say something, even though it was awful timing!"
Unsurprisingly, the birthday blow-up results in Oscar being broken up with by both Jasmine and Josh, but this being Soapland, there's bound to be questions over whether the embers of their romance still burn.
Addressing Josh and Oscar's surprise connection, Vaughan opined that the characters "will always have something between them," but rekindling their affair is probably not at the top of either's priority list.
"For now, they're both single and the door is open, but I don't know if either of them will push it," he concluded. "Josh came to Walford to find his long-lost sister, not to find true love, so I think Jasmine comes first.
"But Josh and Oscar won't be completely far gone from each other!"
