A red, white and blue sea flooded the San Diego FC Soccer Celebration watch party in Mission Beach Friday for the World Cup match between Australia and the United States.
Fans were loud and proud from the opening kickoff to the final whistle as the US prevailed 2-0. The sounds of air horns and U-S-A chants echoed across the Mission Beach water, and Stars and Stripes painted the horizon for the much anticipated match.
A fan from Mexico wearing a bald eagle mask and American flag overalls, told Times of San Diego he wanted to set the tone for the fans here in the states as fans from around the globe gathered together to celebrate and enjoy the biggest sport in the world.
USA soccer fan Jake Kazlauskas called the atmosphere “just so electric.”
“The World Cup, it’s the summer months, it’s June, it’s the afternoon, the sun is beaming down. I think it’s just the vibes of all that and everyone coming together to watch one game, one sport. This is the greatest sport in the world.”
Brandon Lane called moments like the watch party special because of the importance of people uniting for celebrations – and not just for soccer.
“Not too many times in our life where everybody gets to come together and celebrate the same thing. I think it’s awesome that everyone gets to come and do this,” Lane said. “The World Cup is in America and the Fourth of July is coming up, America’s 250th birthday.”
The cheers started early, as Australia’s Cameron Burgess scored an own goal in the 11th minute, giving the Americans a 1-0 lead. Mission Beach absolutely erupted, with fans jumping and screaming and flags flying through the air. The energy of the crowd was so intense you would have thought the game was being played right on the sand.
It didn’t take long for Team USA to capitalize on their momentum, as Alex Freeman scored a header in the 43rd minute to put the US ahead 2-0.
The US continued to showcase their impressive defense in the second half, shutting down Australia for the full 90 minutes. With the victory, the US has officially clinched a spot in the knockout rounds.
Kazlauskas, who is in his 20s, said the team “is the best I’ve seen the US look in a long time. Definitely as long as I’ve been alive.”
He’s ready for more.
“I’m excited to see how they play against Turkey,” Kazlauskas said. “I think we can keep this momentum up and we could make a big run. We are going to play some harder teams, but I got confidence.”
The US’s final group play match is June 26, as Kazlauskas said, against Turkey. SDFC is hosting watch parties for every World Cup match at FIT Social in Mission Beach.
