Mets outfielder Juan Soto slugged a pair of home runs off Phillies righty Aaron Nola on Thursday. Soto now has five homers in his career vs. Nola, his most against any pitcher. Nola moved past Charlie Morton (four home runs allowed) on the list.
1. Witt leaves with knee injury
Royals shortstop Bobby Witt Jr. went down awkwardly after sliding for a ground ball in the fourth inning on Thursday against the Cardinals (video link via Anne Rogers of MLB.com). He remained in the game for the final out of the inning, then was removed for a pinch hitter to lead off the bottom of the frame. The initial diagnosis from the team was right knee discomfort (h/t to Rogers). Witt was 2-for-2 with a home run before exiting the contest. The homer snapped a streak of 20 games without leaving the yard. Despite the lack of power, Witt is enjoying an excellent June. He’s hit .323 with a .429 OBP and 11 stolen bases in the month.
2. Red Sox swept by Blue Jays
Boston dropped all three games of a series against Toronto, capped off by a 4-3 loss on Thursday. The Red Sox scored three times across the seventh and eighth innings to tie the game, but closer Aroldis Chapman permitted a go-ahead RBI double in the ninth inning. It was the club’s fourth straight loss overall and seventh consecutive defeat against AL East foes. “It’s very frustrating, we’re not good,” right-hander Sonny Gray told reporters, including Jen McCaffrey of The Athletic. “We’re just not a good team right now. That’s just a fact.” Boston now heads to Seattle for a three-game set against the AL West-leading Mariners.
3. Soriano to start on Friday
Angels right-hander Jose Soriano is expected to get the ball tonight against the Athletics. He was initially in line to start on Thursday, but was scratched. Ryan Johnson wound up getting the nod in the first game of the series. Soriano was limited to five innings after being struck by a comebacker in his last outing. He also reported chest tightness and sore legs. Manager Kurt Suzuki told reporters that the team was looking to give Soriano an extra day of rest (h/t Rhett Bollinger of MLB.com). The righty has taken a step back after a tremendous start to the season. After posting an 0.84 ERA through April, Soriano put up a 5.34 mark in May. He’s generally kept runs off the board in three June starts, but he has 11 walks in 15 2/3 innings.
