Former India opener and a legend of Indian domestic cricket, Wasim Jaffer prescribes what Rohit Sharma should do and should avoid in the lead-up to the upcoming ODI World Cup in 2027. Jaffer asks the former India captain not to take unnecessary risks to take himself deep in the innings.
Reckoning the unnatural aggressive batting style of Rohit Sharma, Wasim Jaffer believes that the opener should not apply an extra attacking approach, which he applied in the 2024 ICC Men’s T20 World Cup, where India claimed the trophy under the leadership of Rohit Sharma.
Before taking retirement from the T20Is, the ‘Hitman’ revamped his batting style and took on a more attacking approach up in the batting line-up. Ahead of the ODI World Cup, there are chances to see the experienced batter again in his old persona.
Rohit Sharma scored 48 runs from 39 balls with six boundaries and two maximums at a strike rate of 123.08 against Afghanistan at the Ekana Cricket Stadium in Lucknow in the second of the three-match ODI series.
“I feel Rohit Sharma will be a bit aggressive, but I don't think you need to play such a high-risk game in 50-overs compared to T20. He is an attacking player as it is. India has a strong batting line-up too. So that kind of game, which we play in T20, is not needed. I feel he will be looking to play aggressively, but it is important to set the base,” Wassim Jaffer opined in his YouTube channel.
What will be Shubman Gill's batting position?
In Lucknow, India captain Shubman Gill was named as the best player of the match for his masterful 154 runs off 110 balls. As Yashasvi Jaiswal came to open the innings alongside Rohit Sharma, Gill demoted himself to number 3 and scored the mammoth knock.
As the 154-run knock came from the number three position, there are questions around Shubman Gill’s batting spot ahead of the India vs Afghanistan 3rd and final ODI of the ongoing bilateral series.
Jaffer stated that Gill should retain his usual opening spot as soon as Virat Kohli joins the team. Kohli ruled out of the IND vs AFG ODI series because of a hamstring injury he received during the IPL 2026 final match.
“I don't think Gill would want to leave that opening spot. Number four will be too late for him. Shreyas is there. Rahul comes after that. The spot is very tight. I feel Rohit and Shubman will be seen opening once Virat comes. Jaiswal had a great chance. You will not get chances easily, and you need to make the most of them. For some time, Yashasvi has been looking off-color. He has to step up. He has to stay aware, too,” Jaffer added.
No turning back for Ishan Kishan
Along with Shubman Gill, Ishan Kishan was the other batter who smashed a blistering century in Lucknow. The keeper-batter claimed 125 runs off just 79 balls with 14 fours and seven maximums at a strike rate of 158.23. The former cricketer pointed out that, since winning the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy 2025-26 as the captain of the Jharkhand cricket team, there is no turning back for the left-handed versatile batter.
"Ishan Kishan is at the top of his game. The way he led Jharkhand in the SMAT, he has not looked back at all after that. Every format and every opportunity, he is taking it with both hands. He is scoring runs easily and quickly. His offside game has improved. He has given the Indian team a good problem now. They have to think about him. How can they keep him out now? He is a revolution,” Wasim Jaffer continued in the same video.
