Harry Kane’s haters have piped up already – the disrespect is outrageous

England’s World Cup campaign began with a 4-2 triumph over Croatia in Dallas, helped in no small part by a brace from the country’s all-time leading goalscorer, Harry Kane.

The England captain twice put the Three Lions ahead during the first half, but that did not prevent former Germany international Dietmar Hamann, working as a pundit for Irish broadcaster RTÉ Sport, from declaring that “the jury’s out” on the Bayern Munich striker.

The debate surrounding Kane’s ability to deliver when the pressure intensifies is nothing new. Indeed, it has been a ubiquitous feature of the discussion around much of his career. It is also an argument that struggles to withstand proper scrutiny once his achievements are considered in the round.

A quick scan of the history books shows the 32-year-old has consistently scored important goals for England in knockout football.

Here’s a rundown of the highlights:

Converted against Colombia in the last 16 of the 2018 World Cup Struck the decisive second goal against Germany as England recorded their first knockout victory over them in 55 years at Euro 2020 Scored twice more against Ukraine in the quarter-finals Found the net against Denmark in the semi-final Converted his penalty in the final shootout defeat by Italy At the 2022 World Cup, Kane scored against Senegal and France in the knockout rounds Two years later, he headed England’s extra-time winner against Slovakia in the last 16 of Euro 2024 Then he equalised against the Netherlands in the semi-final

All of those feel like pretty intense occasions in which to prove your worth.

Add a World Cup Golden Boot, equalling Gary Lineker’s World Cup record of 10 goals, an international record of 81 in 115 games, and the continued questioning of Kane’s credentials is merely the natural end-point of tribalistic tub-thumping. Add to that the fact he is 28 goals clear of England’s second-highest goalscorer Wayne Rooney, with five fewer appearances.

Hamann, like plenty of others before him, pointed last night to the regularity with which strikers score for Bayern Munich as a means of diminishing Kane’s extraordinary output since moving to Bavaria. Once again, however, the numbers make a mockery of the criticism.

In 147 appearances for the German giants, Kane has scored a mind-boggling 146 goals. Including last summer’s Club World Cup, he registered 64 goals in just 56 matches across Bayern’s extended campaign and became the fastest player in the club’s history to reach 100 goals along the way.

Move the spotlight from the Bundesliga to the Champions League and his record becomes arguably even more impressive. Since leaving north London for Munich, Kane has scored 33 times in 38 appearances in Europe’s elite competition; fourteen of which arrived last season, the highest total recorded by an English player in a single Champions League campaign.

He scored home and away against Real Madrid in the quarter-finals and found the net in both legs of Bayern’s semi-final against Paris Saint-Germain. He then completed his domestic season by bagging a hat-trick against Stuttgart in the German Cup final, securing a domestic double for his club.

Nobody can say with certainty whether England and Kane will return from North America with the World Cup safely stowed in their luggage. Surely, though, (Hamann aside) we can agree that England’s chances of ending a 60-year trophy drought will be hugely enhanced by the continued presence of the country’s greatest goalscorer, arriving at the tournament after the most prolific campaign of his career?
