Chicago suburb changing fireworks policy and it could mean hefty fines

A Chicago suburb has a new warning for residents this summer — if you light off fireworks, it will cost you.

Carpentersville’s police chief spoke about the issues with residents lighting off explosives at a recent board meeting, unveiling a new enforcement plan that will change what happens to those caught lighting them off.

No more warnings, Police Chief Kevin Stankowitz said.

“I feel the only way to to to get it through to them is to give them citations,” he told the village board in a meeting earlier this month.

While Stankowitz said fireworks-related calls have been gradually declining in recent years due to amped up enforcement, a jump in 2025 sparked renewed concerns.

“They fell significantly from 141 calls for service in 2021 to 65 in 2023. Stayed fairly steady in 2024 and then increased to 94 in 2025,” Stankowitz said.

Those 94 incidents resulted in 34 citations, compared to between one and seven citations issued annually in previous years.

New this year, Stankowitz said officers have been directed to largely eliminate warnings, with one exception. Warnings will be up to an officer’s discretion if more important calls come in at the same time.

The crackdown will focus heavily on particular areas, dates and times, Stankowitz said, noting that certain “hot spots” have been identified.

“This initiative, which extends a little past Labor Day of this year, builds on the foundation established in 2025 and aims to reduce the negative effects of illegal illegal fireworks through a balanced approach of education, enforcement and intelligence gathering. Our efforts will target the times and locations that generate the most complaints while also increasing public awareness and accountability,” he said. “The main goal is to improve quality of life, enhance public safety, and decrease the number of fireworks related incidents across the community.”

The first violation will result in a $50 ticket. A second offense jumps to $250 and a third is $500.

Stankowitz said repeat offenders will receive higher fines, adding that there are so-called “frequent flyers” in the suburb.

The village is also executing a social media campaign to remind residents that fireworks are illegal.

“Please remember that personal fireworks are illegal and dangerous within the state of Illinois,” the village wrote on social media in May. “Fireworks can cause serious injuries, fires, property damage, and unnecessary stress for veterans, pets, and individuals with special needs.”
