GTA 6 developer suffers legal setback in huge moment for fired workers

In the months leading up to the release of Grand Theft Auto 6, developer Rockstar Games has suffered a legal setback in the ongoing dispute with workers who claim they were dismissed because of their status as union members.

We first caught wind of trouble afoot at Rockstar when on 30 October 2025, Rockstar sacked 31 employees on the grounds of “gross misconduct”, with most of these employees being based in Rockstar North’s Edinburgh studio.

Shortly after the firings took place, Rockstar told Bloomberg that the dismissed workers had been "distributing and discussing confidential information in a public forum", and that it “was in no way related to people’s right to join a union or engage in union activities”.

The Independent Workers Union of Great Britain (IWGB) called the dismissal a “calculated attack on workers” and revealed that the 31 members were part of a “private trade union Discord channel”, alleging that the firings were “unlawful and retaliatory”.

Rockstar has strongly denied this, but in a recent preliminary hearing in Glasgow, the employment tribunal found that there are disputed factual issues yet to be determined and scheduled the next hearing for 10 September, when Rockstar Games will have to defend itself against claims that it unlawfully dismissed employees in order to prevent or disrupt unionisation.

Radio Times has reached out to Rockstar Games for comment on the latest decision.

One of the workers fired last year, Ella Dunstan, said to IWGB: “This ruling is a huge moment for us,” adding: “Our case will now be heard in full and put to the test as it should be. The world will get to see for itself the evidence as to what happened last October.”

The tribunal hearing runs from 10 September to 15 October, meaning that, failing any appeals, we should find out the verdict ahead of the release of Grand Theft Auto 6.

There are many potential outcomes of the dispute. There is the possibility that, after hearing evidence, the tribunal could dismiss every claim, or only uphold some of the claims made by the 31 former Rockstar workers. It could also rule that, while the workers were unfairly dismissed, Rockstar did not engage in targeting union members.

Alternatively, the tribunal could find that Rockstar unlawfully discriminated against employees because of their trade union membership or activities.

If any of the claims succeed, the tribunal could order remedies including compensation, reinstatement or re-engagement where appropriate, as well as other statutory remedies. It is also possible that the parties could reach a settlement before the tribunal delivers its final judgement.

Regardless, Radio Times Gaming will continue to provide coverage on the ongoing dispute.
