The century of Ishan Kishan put a question mark on Rishabh Pant’s career in the ODIs. A portion of cricket fans lauded Kishan’s name in place of Pant, who has been dealing with off-form for months now, in this format.
Former India spinner Ravichandran Ashwin, however, does not want to rule out Rishabh Pant too early from the 2027 ODI World Cup contention. Ashwin, through his YouTube channel, mentions that it will be too early to predict Ishan Kishan’s future after watching his flamboyant batting against a weak Afghanistan bowling attack.
Along with the captain, Shubman Gill, Ishan Kishan posted a century against Afghanistan in the second of the three-match ODI on June 17 at the Ekana Cricket Stadium in Lucknow. The keeper-batter scored 125 runs from 79 balls with a strike rate of 158.23. His innings was decorated with 14 fours and seven 6s. He is now one of the fastest Indian players to score 1,000 runs in ODIs.
Ashwin says that for the ODI World Cup 2026, KL Rahul could be the first-choice keeper-batter, and the competition will be for the second-choice keeper. For the second spot, the competition is currently between Ishan Kishan and Rishabh Pant. Kishan is currently ahead of Pant in comparison to their current forms.
Ashwin tries to end the debate for now
The former cricketer highlights that the upcoming ODI World Cup will be on South African soil, where batters will be tested heavily. So, in the lead-up to the tournament, R Ashwin suggests BCCI take a look at Rishabh Pant as well.
“KL Rahul will be the first-choice keeper, and Ishan Kishan can probably get a boarding pass as the backup for the World Cup. But I don't think it's fair to let go of Rishabh Pant this early, considering the World Cup will be in South Africa. Pant has performed decently in the middle order in ODIs. Kishan played an outstanding knock, but let's not jump the gun”, Ashwin said on his YouTube channel.
R Ashwin wants to see Ishan Kishan against a quality bowling attack. It could be wrong if the board selects the southpaw only because he smashed a century against the sub-standard bowling line-up of Afghanistan.
“The attack Afghanistan has got here is not a bowling attack at all. It's a sub-standard attack, if we are realistic about it. To print Kishan's boarding pass to South Africa for the World Cup on the back of smashing Afghanistan will be wrong. It's too early to make such a call,” he added.
Ashwin asks more from Washington Sundar
He added a few dedicated lines for the spin bowling all-rounder Washington Sundar, who has received multiple chances under the observance of head coach Gautam Gambhir. Sundar has so far displayed multiple significant performances, which are not enough to impress Ravichandran Ashwin.
“Washington Sundar is getting an extended run and plenty of opportunities under the Gautam Gambhir regime. They are backing him a lot. He has produced a few excellent performances in Tests. But I just feel he needs to produce a little bit more,” Ashwin mentioned.
