The schedule of the Indian Premier League (IPL) is going to change. Keeping an eye on the climate and weather conditions, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is considering selecting a fresh window from next year for hosting the league.
Amid the speculations about a possible timeframe, BCCI secretary Devajit Saikia reveals the exact window they are preferring to host the tournament in 2027. If their plans go according to the chalked directions, then next year’s tournament could start as early as March 10 and finish by May 15 through the final.
During the recent interaction with the news agency PTI, the BCCI secretary highlighted the plans they are working on currently, including an early start of the tournament. A few other reports claimed that from next year, a rich cash league would be held with an extended number of matches.
However, Devajit Saikia has denied that the facts, such as the total number of matches, are directly involved with multiple factors like the international fixtures and the availability of overseas cricketers. So, for now, there is no chance to see a larger number of matches in the 2027 season.
BCCI secretary reveals the possible time frame
“This year, IPL started around the 29th of March, and it was over by the 31st of May. The only thing we are discussing is that during the fag end of the tournament, after 15th of May, there are issues regarding the weather, particularly in some areas, there is apprehension of having rainfall or the pre-monsoon season starting or on the other hand, there are warm weather, hot conditions, which are not very conducive either for the players or for the crowds or the fans,” Saikia told PTI.
Saikia further mentions that he has already told the general manager of games development to monitor the windows so that they can start the league by March 10. If the league opens in early March, then it could come to a conclusion around the second week of May.
If the board can do so, then they could effectively avoid the adverse weather conditions, which became unbearable during the previous season, mostly because of the hot and humid conditions.
Number of matches going to increase?
“From next year, we'll make an effort and I have already instructed our general manager games development to look for the windows whether we can start it by 10th of March so that we want to conclude it by 15th of May so that there is no adverse weather conditions in the run-up to the final stages playoff and the finals of the IPL 2027 which will be the 28th edition of IPL,” he added.
“So far as the other thing regarding increase of the number of matches that is not feasible right at this moment because we have to consider many other factors regarding various players coming from various nations so, at this moment there is no discussion regarding increasing it from 74 to any further matches up to 94 which is not happening immediately,” Devajit Saikia further says to confirm about no increase in total number of match in next season’s Indian Premier League.
