UA launches AI Experience pilot program, testing for fall launch

The UA Teaching Academy and Office of Teaching Innovation and Digital Education launched a pilot test of its upcoming class, the UA AI Experience, this Monday. Opening first to pilot program members, the optional class will be available to all students, faculty and staff during the fall semester. The new course is part of the Future Ready Flagship program spearheaded by UA President Peter Mohler. Just a year into his tenure, Mohler’s program has already expanded to encompass more initiatives covering artificial intelligence, public policy, data science and more.

The AI Experience, tagged with the slogan “Raising the Standard,” is another of his initiatives designed to improve and enhance usage of artificial intelligence on campus, alongside the new High Performance Computing Center and the recently approved School of Data Science.

“Higher education must evolve rapidly to evolve with the workforce needs of the future economy,” Mohler said in a presentation to the Board of Trustees on Friday, proposing that the University provide a “world-class education” in artificial intelligence. “I think our president has a deep interest in this,” said Claire Major, director of the UA Teaching Academy and UA AI Experience. “He very much wants our students to be data literate and technology literate.”

Major led the team behind the creation of the AI Experience and features as an instructor in the program’s online lectures. In the lessons, she teaches a “4D” model on how to “raise the standard for AI usage,” divided into the modules: Discern, Direct, Double-Check and Defend.

“In the end, AI doesn’t bear consequences, people do,” Major said in the introduction to the course, adding that the program is not about “banning AI or celebrating it.”

In sections of the course, Major explains how large language models, the massive algorithms behind AI chatbots, function and take in information. That pivots into discussions about the strengths and weaknesses of LLMs, how to write good prompts, AI security, disclosing AI assistance and more.

Even the course itself comes with an AI disclosure, stating that AI was used “selectively” to aid in “generating examples, refining structure, and improving clarity and readability.” Templates and infographics are also provided to log AI use, judge whether AI would be beneficial for a task and to assess the quality of AI outputs. The course also features hands-on work with a specialized chatbot, Crimson Chat, and a choice of Pathway. Each Pathway consists of application lessons customized for people engaging more in learning, writing or general work at the University.

“We wanted something that would be a good introduction to AI, but not so basic because so many people have already used it,” Major said. “What we’re trying to do is say, ‘If you’re using it, here are some competencies that you need.’” Each of the AI course modules provides a “micro-credential,” which awards a digital badge upon course completion. While the current course takes around three hours to complete, Major said that the Teaching Academy would continue to expand offerings about AI to support the students, faculty and staff in the UA community.

“We will continue to seek out ways to make sure we’re attending to those needs… to support student learning, ultimately,” Major said.
