The Chicago City Council has approved the purchase of a Greyhound bus terminal that had been at risk of closure.
In a 38-10 vote on Wednesday, the City Council approved the $19.2 million purchase of the facility at 630 West Harrison Street on the Near West Side.
According to the text of the agreement, the facility has 24 bus bays and serves Greyhound, FlixBus, Jefferson and Baron bus lines.
The bus terminal has been in peril for years after FlixBus acquired Greyhound earlier in the decade. A report in 2024 had indicated the facility was at risk of closure, which would have made Chicago the largest city in the U.S. without an intercity bus terminal.
Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson had been pushing an effort to purchase the facility, with lawmakers saying public ownership could help reduce overhead costs for the companies that use the terminal.
That terminal serves more than 450,000 riders per year according to the Chicago City Council, and officials had warned abandoning the station would have forced carriers to load and unload passengers on city sidewalks, creating congestion and unsafe conditions.
“There are people in our city that cannot afford to go to Midway or O’Hare … but yet still need to have a viable mode of transportation,” Ald. Jason Ervin told Block Club Chicago.
Some critics had questioned the purchase, as well as the more than $30 million that could be required to upgrade the facility.
That funding would also have to be approved by the City Council, but lawmakers praised the decision as an important first step toward saving and potentially expanding the availability of intercity bus service for Chicago-area residents.
