ROCHESTER, N.Y. — Rochester celebrated Caribbean American Heritage Month with a ceremony Wednesday honoring leaders in the local Caribbean community.
The honorees were recognized for their leadership, service and lasting impact across the region. Each one got a framed statement of Congressional Record highlighting their contributions and accomplishments.
Those News10NBC spoke with were excited to share their culture with the community.
“It feels really good to be recognized, you know, you just go in every day and do what you do and hope somebody notices,” Thalia Walker said. “Jamaicans have a rich tradition and we’re very competitive and we are very passionate about our culture, and any opportunity that we get to share that culture, we take it.”
The event is part of a broader month-long celebration recognizing the culture, history and influence of Caribbean Americans here in Rochester.
