New maps show the risk levels for severe weather and tornadoes Wednesday in the Chicago area.
The images from the Storm Prediction Center still show the largest tornado threat sitting south of Chicago, with the lightest risks to the north.
Already, a tornado watch has been issued for parts of the Chicago area, including LaSalle and Grundy counties, until 3 p.m. as the first of two waves of storms moves in.
“Torrential” downpours and a high flash flooding risk led Chicago officials to issue an “overflow action alert,” advising residents to reduce their water use, including delaying showers and using the washing machine in order to protect water quality.
Golf ball-sized hail, destructive winds up to 80 mph and even strong or intense tornadoes are possible in some parts of the Chicago area and rainfall is expected all day across northeast Illinois and northwest Indiana.
“All areas of northern Illinois and northwest Indiana are at risk for torrential rain rates, which can lead to flash flooding today,” the NWS warned.
The Storm Prediction Center has placed the entire Chicago area under some threat of severe weather Wednesday, with counties to the south, central Illinois and parts of northwest Indiana at the highest risk of the most destructive storms with potentially intense tornadoes.
