Our countdown to Week 1 of the Chicago Bears’ regular season continues. We’re just 88 days away from meaningful Bears football.
Do you guys remember Desmond Clark? Maybe it’s just me, but I have fond memories of Clark while with the Chicago Bears. We are 8⃣8⃣ days away from the Bears kicking off the 2026 regular season vs. the Panthers. Desmond Clark wore No. 88 for the Bears from 2003-2010. In 2006, he set a career high with 626 receiving yards & scored 6 TDs as of the Bears' 2006 NFC Championship-winning squad.[image or embed]

GM Ryan Poles entered this offseason needing help on the defensive line. Unless something unexpected happens between now and the start of the regular season, Bears fans will wake up in Week 1 wondering why the team didn’t do more to upgrade the defensive line in the offseason. Don’t get me wrong. I like that they addressed their depth needs along the D-line. Those moves are valuable, even if they don’t move the needle in terms of generating clicks or fan buzz. But I can’t shake the feeling they missed out on some quality opportunities to do more than get incrementally better in the depth department. ESPN’s Matt Bowen recently took a look at the best available free agents still out there, which was worth looking through considering the Jordan news. Notable edge rushers still in search of a team include Joey Bosa, Jadeveon Clowney, and Haason Reddick. I’m starting to have my doubts that the Bears will use their available cap space on an extra defensive end. Over The Cap has Chicago with $8,294,210 in space under the cap as of this date. It wouldn’t be a popular decision given the team’s current needs, but perhaps the team is better off rolling it over into next year. I’m not sure long-in-the-tooth Chicago football die-hards are prepared to deal with weekly shootouts on Sundays. But, hey, that is what training camp is for … right? Preparation! Part of me is saying this with tongue firmly planted in cheek. However, there is a small part of me that wonders if the Bears’ brass thinks that allocating more assets to the offensive side of the ball will offset the shortcomings on defense. For years, it was the other way around, with Chicago’s front office building defenses it believed could overcome sputtering offenses. Could it work? Who knows!? Joe Tryon-Shoyinka lands on the reserve/retired list just three months after signing a free-agent contract with the Philadelphia Eagles. Tryon-Shoyinka, who played eight games for the Bears after being acquired before the 2025 NFL Trade Deadline, wasn’t spotted at OTAs or mandatory minicamp. Hence, the Eagles put him on the reserve/retired list. Philly’s recent signing of free agent edge defender AJ Epenesa makes a little more sense with this bit of context. Josh Edwards (CBS Sports) cooks up a list of eight teams that could take a shot at selecting Brendan Sorsby in the supplemental draft. The Bears don’t make the cut. However, five opponents on the team’s 2026 schedule do — including the Detroit Lions. I suppose there is no one way to find a developmental backup quarterback. Even though Michael Penix Jr. has yet to take part in practice, the Atlanta Falcons expect the quarterback to be ready to get busy when training camp begins. Penix suffered an ACL injury in Week 11 of the 2025 season, but says he will be a full go when training camp opens in July. The Falcons host the Bears in Week 6. Whether Penix or fellow southpaw Tua Tagovailoa will be ATL’s QB1 remains to be seen. More on the 2026 Bears schedule here.FOLLOW ON SOCIAL MEDIA: Facebook | Twitter | BlueSky
