Beloved Tex-Mex Chain Shutting Down Nearly All Locations Just Weeks After Major Relaunch

A major Tex-Mex chain's comeback appears to be ending almost as quickly as it began.

On The Border Mexican Grill & Cantina has confirmed that all company-owned locations will close, bringing an abrupt end to a turnaround effort that was announced with considerable fanfare just weeks ago.

According to Chron, managers at multiple restaurants said locations across Texas and the rest of the country would be shuttering. In a statement provided to the outlet, On The Border Hospitality confirmed the closures and said company-owned restaurants would cease operations by the end of the day on June 12.

"On The Border Mexican Grill & Cantina has made the difficult decision to move forward with a significant transition in its restaurant operations, which will include the closing of company-owned locations by end of day Friday, June 12, 2026," the company said. "This decision follows a thorough evaluation of the business and was not made lightly. We are currently evaluating the future of the On The Border brand and exploring a range of strategic options."

The company noted that franchise locations in South Dakota, Florida, Nevada, California and South Korea will remain open.

The announcement comes just weeks after On The Border celebrated a new chapter under the ownership of Pappas Restaurants, one of Texas' largest family-owned restaurant groups.

In a May 1 press release, the company highlighted what it described as a major transformation following its acquisition by Pappas. The restaurant chain said it had already completed a "sweeping menu overhaul" and made significant operational improvements designed to elevate the guest experience.

At the time, Pappas Restaurants Chief Marketing Officer Christina Pappas spoke optimistically about the future of the brand.

"On The Border has been woven into the fabric of Texas dining for decades, a place where generations of guests have gathered, celebrated and returned for the Tex-Mex they love. Now, it's part of our family," she said. "This brand carries a deep heritage and a loyal community that we are proud to welcome to the Pappas family."

Founded in Dallas in 1982, On The Border built a national following with its sizzling fajitas, hand-pressed tortillas, fresh guacamole and signature margaritas. The chain had previously filed for bankruptcy before being acquired by Pappas Restaurants.

For now, the future of the iconic Tex-Mex brand remains uncertain as the company says it continues evaluating strategic options for what's next.
