Sean Payton impressed with young Denver Broncos RJ Harvey, Pat Bryant ...Middle East

The Denver Broncos’ roster is chock full of young players, and Sean Payton is impressed with many of them.

On offense, running back RJ Harvey and receiver Pat Bryant enjoyed strong rookie seasons and are looking to step up into Year 2. Meanwhile, Que Robinson will be important on special teams this year.

Last week when speaking at OTAs, Sean Payton highlighted the growth and important experience his young players on both sides of the ball got last year.

Payton’s an old school ball coach and doesn’t usually give rookies a lot of playing time. But he was forced to with Harvey and Bryant, and each paid off by playing well at their respective positions.

Now, both Harvey and Bryant are likely to take on even more, while Que Robinson will be an impact player on defense and special teams.

    RJ Harvey

This time last year, Harvey was in line to be the Broncos starting running back. One year and only one day earlier, the Broncos signed J.K. Dobbins to the roster, but considering the Broncos took Harvey so high—the second round—many thought Harvey may still be the starter.

Instead, Payton and the Broncos leaned on the veteran Dobbins, with great success. Dobbins enjoyed his best year in terms of yards per game (77.2) and was on track to record his first-ever 1,000-yard season before he was injured.

While Dobbins was healthy, Harvey was the backup speed back who really excelled catching the ball out of the backfield. Then, when Dobbins went down, it was Harvey’s time in the spotlight. Tough he scored more often, Harvey’s numbers weren’t as good when defenses focused in on him.

Still, Payton likes what he sees.

“Just overall, the offense and the vision,” Payton said of Harvey. “We thought he had a real good rookie year, especially in the passing game. You see him with a lot of route variations. That room has changed quite a bit now, so there’s good competition. You guys have been around him enough. He’s not very talkative, but it’s not because he doesn’t have a good personality. It’s just his nature.”

When the coach says the room has changed, he’s talking about incoming rookie Jonah Coleman, who Denver took in the 4th round this year.

Coleman is a bigger back, and Payton even said earlier in the offseason he reminded him of Dobbins. So it seems unlikely he could leapfrog Harvey. But it’s something to keep an eye on.

    Pat Bryant

While Harvey was expected to contribute at a high level as a rookie, Bryant was more a depth piece and had a slower start to his career. In fact, he only had four receptions through his first six games.

Then, his first touchdown came in Week 8 against the Cowboys. And Bryant blossomed with a 5-catch, 82-yard day in the win over the Kansas City Chiefs in Week 11.

He battled through multiple concussions, but was still a valuable contributor to the Broncos offense.

And Payton liked how quickly he caught on.

“He’s a quick study. He gets it real fast,” Payton explained. “I think one of his great skill sets is his run after the catch because his feet stay on the ground when he catches it. He has strong hands in traffic. He’s having a good stretch here. He’s healthy. Certainly in Year 2, he knows exactly what to do. There’s a confidence about him, a maturity. You wouldn’t feel like he was a second-year player if you didn’t know it.”

From the sound of that comment, expect Bryant to take a major step forward in 2026.

Of course, that room was also radically changed this offseason when the Broncos traded for Jaylen Waddle. But it looks like Bryant, Troy Franklin, and Marvin Mims will all be battling for the No. 3 receiver spot.
