Across 113 plate appearances on the year, Shaw is now hitting .255/.313/.422/105 wRC+. It’s really hard to overstate how impressive that is when he’s starting only periodically, frequently coming off the bench, and also having to learn multiple new positions (and switch among them constantly).
Sometimes I wonder how he would look at the plate right now if he’d been starting in a single spot all season. I am not saying I regret any of the Cubs’ moves before the season began, nor am I necessarily (yet) saying some dramatic change needs to be made. I am only saying that I wonder. How quickly we forget that just a couple years ago, Matt Shaw was a top-50 prospect in baseball, laying waste to the upper minors on a trajectory that had him possibly becoming an impact bat in the big leagues.
