Matt Shaw’s Big Night and Big Contributions

Although he does deserve credit for being patient during his shrimp-inducing walk-off-walk, that was hardly the sum of Matt Shaw’s great night at the plate last night. He was overshadowed, of course, by Pete Crow-Armstrong hitting for the cycle, but Shaw was a big part of the win, too.

In the game, Shaw went 2-for-4 with the game-winning walk, and his triple earlier in the game gave the Cubs their 2-1 lead.

Although he hasn’t been an everyday player, it’s clear that the Cubs were missing having Shaw available to, for example, what he did last night. Be a different kind of bat. Play in right field (or wherever). And hopefully come through in a big moment.

For his part, Shaw is just trying to embrace and enjoy the opportunity to contribute how and where he can.

“I think any player, at one time or another, gets caught up in performance, trying their best to perform,” Shaw said after the game, per the Tribune. “But I just have the perspective now of it’s not really about necessarily performance, it’s about enjoying the game because opportunities aren’t always there, but being able to play and play the game I love, regardless of what the situation looks like, is enjoyable.”

Across 113 plate appearances on the year, Shaw is now hitting .255/.313/.422/105 wRC+. It’s really hard to overstate how impressive that is when he’s starting only periodically, frequently coming off the bench, and also having to learn multiple new positions (and switch among them constantly).

Sometimes I wonder how he would look at the plate right now if he’d been starting in a single spot all season. I am not saying I regret any of the Cubs’ moves before the season began, nor am I necessarily (yet) saying some dramatic change needs to be made. I am only saying that I wonder. How quickly we forget that just a couple years ago, Matt Shaw was a top-50 prospect in baseball, laying waste to the upper minors on a trajectory that had him possibly becoming an impact bat in the big leagues.
