SLC imposes sanctions on Sri Lanka A players for Vaibhav Sooryavanshi incident, no action from BCCI

The Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) will impose sanctions on Sri Lanka A players for their conduct against India A in Dambulla on June 15. After the match ended in a Super Over, Vishen Halambage and Vaibhav Sooryavanshi were involved in a physical altercation, but words were exchanged throughout the game.

Halambage will be the main culprit for the disciplinary breaches. But other players will be punished as well. Interestingly, match referee Pradeep Jeyapragash has imposed a fine on Sri Lanka A player, Niroshan Dickwella. The wicketkeeper was the one who separated Halambage and Sooryavanshi to avoid further conflict.

According to Cricbuzz, Jeyapragash has fined Dickwella for a separate offence. It’s unclear what the transgression was, but it could be something as simple as excessive appealing. The on-field umpires Prageeth Rambukwella and Shantha Fonseka provided a detailed report of the incident, and Jeyapragash took action based on it.

The International Cricket Council (ICC) has played no role in the sanctions, and it’s the SLC, which isn’t pleased with the conduct of Sri Lankan players on home soil against visitors, that has prompted the punishment. It previously came out that senior Sri Lankan players have apologised to India A and Sooryavanshi for the incident, as the teenager was told to “go home; this is not the IPL.”

    No punishment from BCCI

Meanwhile, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) won’t take any action against Sooryavanshi or India A captain Tilak Varma, who argued with the on-field umpires on multiple occasions in the final stages of the India A vs Sri Lanka match. However, if the ICC gets involved, both can be fined and handed demerit points for breaching the code of conduct.

“We will let our players concentrate on the tournament, and they should not be distracted by any collateral issues,” BCCI Secretary Devajit Saikia told Sportstar.
