Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer spoke on Monday in Walworth about the bill he introduced. He says meat prices have been increasing because only a few corporate giants dominate the industry, making it unfair for smaller farms. The bill aims to break up what Schumer calls “big meat monopolies” and make small farming more profitable.
Currently, four companies, Tyson Foods, JBS, Cargill, and National Beef, control 85% of the beef market, 67% of the pork market, and 60% of the chicken market. The Senate bill seeks to force the companies to choose one specialty, rather than dominating beef, pork, and chicken all at once. The bill would also give financial and technical assistance to small businesses that want to acquire or expand meatpacking plants.
