This weeks special issue debates the future of the BBC

In this issue, we have unapologetically devoted a great deal of space to the future of the BBC. Last November, I asked readers to share their views on an institution that is woven into the fabric of British life. The response was remarkable. Hundreds of you wrote to us, and many of you also took part in the BBC's own consultation about its future.

As we read through your letters and emails, one thing became clear. Whether supportive, critical or somewhere in between, you really care about the programmes, the services, the values and the role the BBC plays in national life.

We've also invited broadcasters, writers, performers and commentators to join the conversation. They don't all agree with one another, nor should they. But what binds every contribution in these pages is a shared belief that the future of the BBC matters.

That's why we'll be sending the responses to the Department for Culture, Media and Sport, and the BBC's new director-general, Matt Brittin. As decisions are made about the corporation's future, we believe the voices of those who watch, listen and pay for it deserve to be heard.

My thanks go to Tom Loxley, Radio Times's brand director, who first championed this project and has been working with the editorial team to bring it together.

Most of all, thank you for taking part. As the corporation enters the most important period in its history, your contributions have brought something invaluable to the discussion – the voice of the audience itself.
