Cubs vs Rockies Part II: This Time at Wrigley Field

Cubs vs Rockies — The first Cubs-Rockies series (last week) did not go anywhere near how we had hoped, with the Cubs dropping each of the first two games while scoring a combined 5 runs between them. It was particularly frustrating to face Michael Lorenzen and his 8.00+ ERA without doing any damage whatsoever.

But the Cubs won the final game of that Rockies series, and, aside from Logan Webb’s usual dominance on Sunday, have looked better offensively ever since:

W vs Rockies: 9 runs scored W vs Giants: 5 runs scored W vs Giants: 6 runs scored

That’s not something we’d normally call out with such enthusiasm, but given the way things had been going offensively before that, those three games felt like watching the ’27 Yankees.

In any case, the Cubs will get another shot at Lorenzen (tonight) and Feltner (tomorrow), who they actually did rock in the last finale, as I mentioned: 4.1 IP, 4H, 6ER, 3BB, 3K. And for this finale on Wednesday, the Cubs will get left-hander Sean Sullivan, who has a 5.60 ERA across 11 Triple-A starts so far this season.

Just keep hitting, guys. Against these pitchers, two of whom you JUST saw, there’s really no reason not to.

On the flip side, Shota Imanaga will pitch tonight. And while he did just throw well against the Rockies his last time out, the wind is blowing out at Wrigley this evening, which isn’t a good match for his flyball style. We’ll see. I’m pretty worried the homers will be back. I guess I’ve just lost faith in him after that brutal run.

Tomorrow, Edward Cabrera is throwing, and I’m very interested to see how he looks. His first start off the IL was bad, but his velocity was up. And that held true for his second start off the IL, which went way better: 5.1 IP, 5H, 2ER, 2BB, 5K. Two solo homers, but more impressive overall.

And then, on Wednesday, Javier Assad takes the mound again following back-back-back scoreless appearances of at least 6.0 innings. Both games were played against the Giants, so now we’ll see if he can keep that up against a new team.

The one other thing to keep an eye on this series will be the return (or not) of Seiya Suzuki. The Cubs right fielder just started hitting – and playing better defense – when he re-injured his knee on a play in right field. He was supposed to start at DH yesterday, but was a late-scratch. We’ll see how that goes tonight.

The Cubs remain just two games over .500, but their next ten games are against sub-.500 teams (Rockies, Blue Jays, Mets). After that, it’s back to the Brewers. So better make some headway now.
