Oncology Experts Wish People Would Stop Doing This One Thing Every Morning

It can be tough to get your day going, which is why so many people have a morning routine they regularly lean into. But while sticking with a consistent routine can help you establish healthy patterns, it can also raise the risk that you’ll fall into some bad habits.

Unfortunately, that includes raising your risk of cancer. Certain foods you eat could increase the odds of developing cancer, especially if you have them consistently.

“Diet influences cancer risk through several mechanisms, including body weight, insulin resistance, inflammation, the gut microbiome, and the nutrients or chemicals we expose our bodies to every day,” says Dr. Tracy Crane, PhD, RDN, director of lifestyle medicine, prevention and digital health at University of Miami Sylvester Comprehensive Cancer Center. Meaning, the risk of cancer from your diet can come at you from several angles, even with the same food.

“One meal will not cause cancer, but the pattern on your plate can either fuel risk or help build resilience,” Dr. Crane tells Parade.

Dr. Wesley Talcott, MD, a radiation oncologist at Northwell’s Lenox Hill Hospital, agrees. “Diet is one of the most impactful and modifiable contributors to cancer risk,” he says.

There’s no one food or breakfast that will magically lead to cancer. But consistently loading up on the wrong stuff can raise the odds you’ll experience this disease down the road. Here’s what oncology experts want you to keep off your plate in the morning.

You’re not doing yourself any favors if you regularly load your plate with heavily processed, high-sugar breakfast foods like traditional breakfast cereals and pastries. There are a few reasons why these aren’t great for you, according toDr. Ketan Thanki, MD, colorectal surgeon with the MemorialCare Todd Cancer Institute at Long Beach Medical Center in Long Beach, CA.

“Excess calories and refined carbohydrates promote obesity,” he says. (Obesity is a direct risk factor for several forms of cancer, according to the National Cancer Institute (NCI).)

“Carrying excess body fat is linked to an increased risk of developing over a dozen types of cancer, and diets high in processed foods are a significant driver of obesity in the United States,” Dr. Talcott says.

These foods also increase levels of the hormone insulin in your body, along with inflammatory proteins that can drive tumor growth, Dr. Thanki tells Parade.

Heavily processed, high-sugar breakfast foods like muffins and pastries are high in calories but low in fiber and protein. “That means they spike blood sugar and insulin without keeping you full,” Dr. Talcott explains. “Additionally, these foods may contain additives that are being investigated as potential drivers of malignancy, though it is very important to note that these direct links are still being studied.”

But Dr. Crane stresses that these foods aren’t doing much for your body from a nutrition perspective, either, sharing, “If your breakfast could be dessert instead, it is not setting your body up for the rest of the day or cancer prevention."

The Best Diet To Lower Your Cancer Risk

There is no single anti-cancer diet, but there are certain foods recommended over others to lower your risk of the disease. The American Cancer Society (ACS) recommends eating a variety of fruits and vegetables, whole grains, lean protein sources and low-fat dairy products each day.

These foods contain vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants to lower your cancer risk, and they’re also typically low in calories, per the ACS. It's also important to limit foods high in saturated fats, added sugar and salt, according to the organization.

The best breakfast foods to lower your cancer risk are also good for your overall health, according to Dr. Ezekiel J. Emanuel, MD, PhD, oncologist, co-director of the Healthcare Transformation Institute at the University of Pennsylvania Perelman School of Medicine.

“Eat more protein and fiber,” he says.

He lists these off as “ideal” breakfasts for overall health and cancer prevention:

Plain Greek yogurt with berries and nuts.  Eggs with whole-grain toast.Oatmeal with nuts and fruit.

Dr. Crane also suggests building your breakfast around fiber, protein and minimally processed foods. “Think: protein plus plants before processed sugar,” she says.

Dr. Talcott agrees, sharing, “The goal is fiber and protein, with enough carbohydrates to fuel the body without spiking blood sugar too dramatically."
