ROCHESTER, N.Y. – We are tracking strong to severe storms that will be moving through the area this afternoon and evening. The main threats are strong, possibly damaging winds, and heavy rain that could cause flooding. We have also extended the Yellow Alert to cover this morning as well, as there will be some on and off showers that could include some thunder through the A.M. hours.
Strong storms for the Rochester region will last from 2-5pm, give or take an hour. For the Finger Lakes, 4-7pm. The Finger Lakes in particular have the greatest chance for severe weather and damaging winds with gusts up to 40-45 MPH. Expect scattered tree damage and power outages, again mainly near the FLX. Flood threat has increased area-wide since our last forecast. Rain totals will be 1-2″, possibly more in the areas with the most consistent rain. Best chance for that again is in the FLX. If you see a flooded road, do not attempt to drive through it. The water is always deeper than it looks. Hail and tornado threat is low, but not out of the question.
By 7-8pm, storms will have exited the region. We will likely still see some rain after that time, but it will be much lighter. Rain as a whole will taper off overnight, with drier and cool air replacing it.
Monday and Tuesday we will be back to Green on the Threat Tracker as high pressure settles in. Expect mostly sunny skies, cooler air with highs in the upper 60s/low 70s, and calm winds. Rain chances return Wednesday through Friday, with Thursday in particular possibly including some thunder.
