Alabama waited 27 years to make its sixth College World Series appearance, but got shut out 9-0 by Oklahoma as it dropped its opening game in Omaha for the first time in program history.
“Hat tip to Oklahoma,” head coach Rob Vaughn said. “They played great today. We said it before, this was two teams playing really good baseball right now. Who was going to execute better? And man, you got to tip their cap.”
The Sooners jumped out to an early 2-0 lead with two outs in the top half of the first inning. Trey Gambill drilled a two-run double into the right-center field gap.
Crimson Tide center fielder Bryce Fowler, shortstop Justin Lebron and catcher Brady Neal went three up, three down in the bottom of the first inning.
With runners at the corners and nobody out in the top of the third inning, Deiten Lachance bounced into a 5-4-3 double play to extend the Sooners’ lead to 3-0.
Crimson Tide starting pitcher Tyler Fay worked his first 1-2-3 inning of the ballgame in the top of the fifth with some help from a diving catch by left fielder Eric Hines.
In the bottom of the fifth inning, designated hitter John Lemm lined a single into center field for the Crimson Tide’s first hit of the ballgame. Hines followed with a single of his own. However, second baseman Brennan Holt bounced into a 3-6-3 double play and first baseman Luke Vaughn grounded out to second to end the inning.
Lachance crushed a two-run home run to deep left field in the top of the sixth inning to extend the Sooners’ lead to 5-0.
Left-hander Ashton Crowther replaced Fay on the mound in the top of the seventh and worked a 1-2-3 inning. The Nebraska native, Fay, in what could be his last start in an Alabama uniform, fired six innings, allowing five runs, six hits, walking two and striking out six on 101 pitches.
“I mean, it was kind of a disappointing outing for me,” Fay said. “Didn’t really have the slider working at all. But they had a lot of really tough ABs early in the game and kind of just got some momentum built up. And yeah, I think they did a good job hitting everything.”
Third baseman Jason Torres, Lemm and Hines struck out in order in the bottom half of the seventh inning. Sooners starting pitcher Cord Rager, who the Crimson Tide didn’t face the first time they played the Sooners back in April due to arm fatigue, completely shut down the Crimson Tide offense with seven shutout innings.
“I mean, when he’s on the mound, you definitely have the chance to win, like no matter who you face,” Sooners catcher Lachance said of Rager. “I mean, you can put the Yankees in front of me. I don’t mind.”
Crowther came back out for the top of the eighth inning and allowed four earned runs. Jaxon Willits lined an RBI single to left-center field to extend the Sooners’ lead. Brendan Brock followed with an RBI single of his own. Even Steckmesser took over for Crowther and allowed a two-run single to Dasan Harris to make it a 9-0 ballgame.
Sam Mitchell came in relief for Steckmesser in the top of the ninth and worked a 1-2-3 inning with a strikeout.
The Crimson Tide went scoreless in the bottom of the ninth to put the finishing touches on a dominant 9-0 Sooners win.
The Crimson Tide will now face either Georgia or Texas on Monday at 2 p.m. CT on ESPN with its season on the line.
“It just didn’t really go our way, kind of got beat in every way of the game, but that’s part of it, man,” Neal said. “It’s happened to us before, and we bounced back really well. So just excited for Monday to get back out there and show everybody how we can really play.”
