The Young and the Restless had the opportunity to welcome CBS’s newest daytime drama, Beyond the Gates, into the daytime fold with a historic crossover event. Now Daytime Emmy winner Peter Bergman shares what it was like to be a part of such a monumental moment for daytime television.
In an exclusive interview with Parade, Bergman revealed that when CBS first approached him, his reaction was “What took you so long?” He was chomping at the bit to be a part of this moment.

The actor explained, “I was thrilled to be included in this little group that got to visit, and there will be more, because I came back telling everybody what a cool experience it was, so I think everybody's going to be ‘behind the gates’ before too long. Yeah, I gotta say, it was just a lovely experience, and I thought it would be good; it was better than I ever expected.”
Comparing his experience on Beyond the Gates with his previous crossover appearances on The Bold and the Beautiful, Bergman reminded fans that “Bold and Beautiful is a neighbor; it was across the hall, so I knew everybody there.”
Meanwhile, with Beyond the Gates, it was all new faces. “It was a whole company I got to meet.”
Bergman explained that the most interesting thing was how everyone started at the same time. “When I went to Bold and Beautiful, there was a hierarchy. There were the people who'd been there for 20 years, and people who'd been there for 10 years, and people who'd just been hired. At Beyond the Gates, everybody had the same weight, the same investment, the same joy in what they were doing. It was a unique experience, unlike anything I'd ever experienced.”
During the crossover event, a giant tornado tore through Fairmont Crest, leaving the city ravaged, including the country club that hosted The Young and the Restless crossover event.
Reflecting on filming the stunt, Bergman added, “It was intense, but try to do that on any other daytime set, and people are cranky, and jaded, and saying ‘we've been doing this for how long? Now we've got to do these crazy night shoots?’”
Meanwhile, Bergman acknowledged that the cast and crew of Beyond the Gates were engaged. “Everyone's attitude was acknowledging that we're doing something special, we're doing something unique. We're a new show; we're turning this into everything it can be. You saw that everywhere, and the folks from The Young and the Restless were dazzled.”
Discussing the final product, Bergman shared, “I think the scale of it is stunning.” He added, “The number of people involved is pretty amazing.”
Bergman acknowledged that he’s been part of daytime television for a really long time, having started his career on All My Children as Dr. Cliff Warner in 1979, and that this stunt was unlike anything he's been a part of. Sharing, “I've never seen anything like this.”
