I Tried Trader Joes New Turkish Cheese-Stuffed Flatbread and Immediately Went Back for More

I'm as big a fan of Trader Joe's as the next person, but let's be honest: not every single item that hits the shelves is a certified winner. That's why I was so excited when I finally found the brand-new Trader Joe's Gözlemes ($4.99) tucked away in the freezer section during a recent run to my local store.

Before spotting them, I had never heard of a gözleme (pronounced guz-leh-mehs), and I'm certainly no Turkish cuisine expert. But you don't need to be a culinary expert to know what tastes good. While I can't speak completely to their absolute street-vendor authenticity, I do know one thing: if the food in Turkey tastes anything like these, I'm booking a flight to Istanbul tomorrow morning.

    What's Inside These Gözlemes?

    Fred Hernandez

Traditionally, a gözleme is a popular Turkish street food made from thin dough stuffed with fillings such as cheese, spinach, potatoes or meat. Trader Joe's version keeps it simple with just cheese.

Each box comes with three individually wrapped flatbreads for $4.99. As a Mexican American, my first thought after taking a bite was that it tasted like an insanely good quesadilla. But after looking at the ingredients, I realized something very different was happening here.

Instead of cheddar or Monterey Jack, Trader Joe's uses a blend of tulum, kashkaval and mozzarella cheeses. The tulum adds a tangy, slightly salty flavor, while the kashkaval brings richness and a buttery note. Mozzarella ties everything together with the melty cheese pull you'd expect.

Each flatbread contains 400 calories and 17 grams of protein, making it filling enough for a quick lunch or hearty snack.

The package directions call for heating the gözleme from frozen in a completely dry skillet over medium-low heat for about five minutes per side. I lowered the heat slightly and let mine cook a bit longer because I wanted the exterior extra crispy.

That turned out to be the right move. A little cheese escaped onto the pan and crisped up around the edges, creating a crispy and crunchy bite.

    How Do They Actually Taste?

If you love a good quesadilla or grilled cheese, you'll love these. The flatbread gets incredibly crispy and flaky on the outside while staying soft and slightly doughy inside.

The three-cheese blend is the real star. The tangy tulum and buttery kashkaval balance perfectly with the gooey mozzarella, creating a rich, savory filling that keeps you coming back for another bite.

Since I didn't happen to have my usual condiments on hand when I made these, I ended up enjoying them completely plain. Honestly, I couldn't have been happier. They are rich and flavorful all on their own.

Why You Need to Clear Out Freezer Space ASAP

If you can't tell by now, these have earned a permanent spot in my freezer. I'd easily give Trader Joe's Gözlemes a nine out of 10. If you spot them in the freezer aisle on your next Trader Joe's run, I'd strongly recommend grabbing a box.
