Enhanced Box Score: Cubs 5, Giants 0 – June 12, 2026

Five more runs?! Another multi-hit game for Seiya Suzuki? A double and more hard contact off the bat of Alex Bregman? I know it’s just the Giants, but these days, it feels nice when the Cubs simply do what’s expected of them.

After dropping down to .500 for the first time since being 9-9, the Chicago Cubs have won back-to-back games for the first time since the Pirates series at the end of May. During these two games, they’ve scored 14 runs while allowing just four. And the best part is they’ve got their best starter, Ben Brown, set to take the mound for Game 2.

But back to the game, specifically: here’s a trio of fun facts:

With another double last night, PCA extended his on-base streak to 16 games, during which he’s slashing .353/.413/.676 (204 wRC+). And the best part is he’s earning it BIG time: 18.0% barrel rate, 52 hard%. With his homer last night, Michael Busch extended his on-base streak to 18 games, during which he’s slashing .328/.432/.552 (178 wRC+) Don’t look now, but Seiya Suzuki has a nine-game hitting streak, and is otherwise slashing .298/.333/.509 (136 wRC+) over his last 60 PAs dating back to May 27. The slump was icy cold, but he might be waking up.

Okay, enough of that. Now it’s time to talk about the star of the show. And the Ankin Law “Makin’ It Personal” Player of the Game … Javier Freakin’ Assad.

For the second time in as many chances, Javier Assad kept the Giants scoreless over at least 6.0 innings with five strikeouts and one walk. That’s impressive no matter who you’re facing, but he did it against a team that’s actually been a roughly top-10 offensive unit versus right-handed pitching this season. AND he did it after just facing them five days ago (which is usually a big advantage for the hitters).

I’m not going to do the full Assad deep dive treatment right now, but I am definitely taking notice that his velocity is back up to where it was in 2022-2023. He’s always had some success in the big leagues; we know this, but something feels different. And, hey, at the rate these pitcher injuries are going, he might just be in the rotation the rest of the way. Wouldn’t hate if we finally landed on him as a full-time starting pitcher.

Okay, Cubs. You just had back-to-back convincing wins. You scored runs. You pitched well. And you’ve got your best starter going tonight. Can you please finally win a series?
