Germany vs Curaçao Prediction: World Cup 2026 Match Preview

Julian Nagelsmann’s side get their FIFA World Cup campaign started on Sunday. We look ahead to the game with our Germany vs Curaçao prediction and preview.

Germany vs Curaçao: The Key Insights

Curaçao lost to Germany in a massive 90.7% of pre-match simulations by the Opta supercomputer. Germany are making their 21st World Cup appearance, more than any other European nation and second only to Brazil overall (23). Curaçao’s Dick Advocaat will become the oldest head coach in the history of the competition.

Curaçao will be out for a historic upset on their World Cup debut when they face four-time champions Germany on Sunday at Houston Stadium.

With Mexico, Canada and the United States all exempt from CONCACAF qualifying as co-hosts, Curaçao took full advantage to make history and become the smallest nation – both by area and population – to qualify for the World Cup.

They are the first CONCACAF debutants since Panama in 2018. However, no nation from the confederation has escaped the group stage in their debut appearance since Costa Rica in 1990, when they made the round of 16.

Owing to the expanded 48-team competition, the Opta supercomputer’s pre-tournament predictions gave Curaçao a 19% chance of reaching the round of 32. Germany topped Group E, in which they also face Ecuador and Ivory Coast, in 59.9% of 25,000 simulations.

Dick Advocaat will still feel his side are fully deserving of their place here. Curaçao led the way for goals scored (28) and expected goals (22.9) in CONCACAF qualifying, while their four goals from high turnovers was only bettered by Costa Rica’s six.

Central to those exploits was Kenji Gorré was also one of only four players to register 3+ goals and 3+ assists in their confederation’s qualifiers, and the only Curaçao representative to do so.

Curaçao boss Advocaat – aged 78 years and 260 days on the day of this game – will make history, too, becoming the oldest head coach at a World Cup. The 39-year and 299-day age gap between Advocaat and Germany’s Julian Nagelsmann (38y 326d) will be the largest between two head coaches facing each other ever at a World Cup.

However, Nagelsmann’s youthfulness does not take away from Germany’s significant experience. They are making their 21st World Cup appearance, the most of any European nation and second only to Brazil overall (23).

Die Nationalelf’s four world titles can only be matched by Italy among European nations and bettered by Brazil (five) overall.

Although they boast a glittering record on this stage, Germany failed to reach the knockout stages in both 2018 and 2022. However, they have advanced beyond the first round in the other 16 out of 18 occurrences since last missing the World Cup in 1950.

But Germany have lost their opening match in each of the last two editions, against Mexico in 2018 and Japan four years later. Their last clean sheet was way back in the 2014 final when they overcame Argentina 1-0 after extra-time, thanks to Mario Götze’s winner.

Nagelsmann’s side also lost their European qualifying opener against Slovakia, but they went on to win their next five matches and top Group A. Nick Woltemade was key to their success – he managed more goal involvements than any other German player during the qualifiers, scoring four times (from as many shots on target) and delivering one assist.

At the other end of the pitch, Manuel Neuer could become the second German to play in five World Cups, after Lothar Matthäus. Neuer would also be the second goalkeeper to appear in five editions, joining Mexico’s Antonio Carbajal.

The Bayern Munich goalkeeper’s experience, alongside Joshua Kimmich’s nous, will be vital if Germany are to improve on the 5.8% chance the Opta supercomputer gave them of winning the World Cup before a ball was kicked.

    Germany vs Curaçao Head-to-Head

There is no head-to-head history between this pair as this will be the first encounter between Germany and Curaçao.

However, Germany have won 14 of their last 17 World Cup matches against teams from the Americas (D1 L2).

Curaçao’s last fixture with a European side – a friendly against Scotland at the end of May – ended in a 4-1 defeat as Jürgen Locadia was sent off.

    Germany vs Curaçao Prediction

The Opta supercomputer cannot see anything other than a Germany win – they triumphed in a huge 90.7% of 10,000 pre-match simulations.

Curaçao have just a 3.6% likelihood of marking their debut with an unlikely victory.
