A go-ahead RBI single from Gavin Gallaher in the seventh and a massive three-run home run from Colin Hynek in the eighth helped the Diamond Heels overcome a 2-1 deficit and beat Ole Miss 6-2 in their first game at the Men’s College World Series in Omaha Friday night.

Carolina trailed 1-0 entering the sixth inning and 2-1 entering the seventh, but took the lead in the seventh and added to it in the eighth. Jason DeCaro allowed just two runs across 6.2 innings in his second College World Series start, and Caden Glauber recorded the game’s final 10 outs to slam the door. UNC is now 26-0 when Glauber pitches this season and 47-0 when leading in the seventh inning or later.
Friday’s game was the first meeting in baseball between UNC and Ole Miss since 1969, and also Carolina’s first ever win against the Rebels. UNC has now won its last three opening games at the College World Series.
Up next, the Diamond Heels will face West Virginia in the winner’s bracket Sunday at 7 p.m. Eastern time. The Mountaineers defeated Troy 7-5 in Friday’s first game.
