When Apple announced the Live Photo feature, I thought it was one of the coolest things they’d released in a long time. I was a little skeptical at first, but it quickly grew on me and has become one of my favorite ways to relive memories. Now, imagine you could do that with any photo? That’s what the Homture Magic Frame offers.
About the Homture Magic Frame
The Homture Magic Frame is a Wi-Fi-enabled digital photo frame that combines traditional photo display capabilities with modern artificial intelligence features. Designed to help families preserve and share memories, the frame goes beyond simply displaying images by offering AI-powered tools that can animate still photographs, restore aging pictures, and add color to black-and-white images.
Featuring a 10.1-inch touchscreen display with a 1920 x 1200 resolution, the Magic Frame includes built-in storage for thousands of photos and connects to the Homture mobile app for wireless photo uploads. Family members can send images directly to the frame from virtually anywhere, making it an appealing option for keeping loved ones connected across long distances.
One of the Magic Frame’s most distinctive features is its AI enhancement technology. Users can transform static photos into short animated clips, breathe new life into vintage family portraits, and improve the appearance of older images without requiring advanced editing skills. These capabilities help set the Magic Frame apart from traditional digital photo frames that focus solely on photo display.
With cloud-based sharing, remote photo management, and AI-assisted photo enhancements, the Homture Magic Frame aims to serve as both a digital photo album and an interactive way to revisit treasured memories.

Original PhotoUser Experience
The Magic Frame comes in a pretty unique box. It opens up with a ‘double-door’ design and reveals the frame, its power cable, and the manual. The setup process is pretty straightforward, especially if you’ve ever set up a digital picture frame. I had to create a free account by entering an email address and password. The app allows you to set up the frame for yourself or for someone else in case you plan on gifting it to them. Once you have the app and account set up, you pair it to the frame by entering the frame pairing code that is displayed on the app. At this point, you can send photos to the frame from the app.
Now, the ‘magic’ of the frame happens when you take a photo from your phone (either the photo library or by taking a new photo) and apply an AI effect to it. Each magic photo takes 100 credits. A new frame comes with a coupon for 2,000 free credits via a coupon card that is in the box with the frame. You redeem it through the settings in the app. Once you set up your account, you get another 200 credits. So, this is enough to experiment with a few different AI effects.
At the time that I am writing this, there are a limited number of effects available. There are several that are similar to what you would see in Harry Potter. One of the other popular effects is waving. While the website says that more templates are dropping “regularly,” I would love to see an option for users to be able to simply state via chat what they want to see. For example, I uploaded a picture of my brother, my grandfather, and me on a porch swing. It would have been great to see us actually swinging.
Right now the AI effects only apply the set template to the photo as long as the content of the photo matches the template’s parameters. I tried uploading a photo of myself to apply one of the “Magic Cast” effects, but it didn’t include my arms or shoulders enough. That means the AI effects engine couldn’t extrapolate accurately from the existing content to create the rest of the image.
I think the existing templates do a work really well and create some amazing results with the existing image. So, I am eager to see what happens with newer templates and features.
As far as the expense of the credits goes, this is what the app shows.
500 credits = $4.99 1000 credits = $9.99 2000 credits = $19.99It also shows that for a first purchase discount, users get double what they pay for. So if you buy 500 credits, you get 500 additional credits for the same price. You can use the frame without any credits at all, but you lose the magic part of it. I have to admit that I wasn’t sure if it was something that was worth it, but when I saw an old photo of my grandmother holding my uncle as a baby and they were waving at me, I could definitely see the appeal of having the effects. At first, I thought it was a little creepy, but the more I watched the images, the cooler I thought it was.
I do really like that the app gives you 24 hours to decide if you are happy with the AI effect on a photo. If not, it will refund the credits to your balance. Also, if you try to apply an effect to a photo, but it’s not a good candidate for the AI effect, you get the credits refunded. This happened to me a couple of times while I was experimenting with different effects.
The screen is 1080p resolution and looks very clear. I was impressed with the sharpness of the images. You do have the ability to adjust brightness, but no other picture settings are available. The frame has a volume control, but I could only hear system sounds. I didn’t see a way to add a soundtrack to your slideshow. That would be a great addition for future versions.
Conclusion
The Homture Magic Frame takes digital picture frames into a completely new dimension. The AI effects will only get better from here and even though I wish there was a little more customization of those effects, I think it’s still a really impressive way to preserve memories.
