Barcelona GP: Russell on top in FP1 as rookie Fornaroli shines

George Russell set the pace in the opening practice session for the Barcelona-Catalunya Grand Prix, putting Mercedes on top of the timesheets ahead of McLaren's Oscar Piastri and Ferrari's Charles Leclerc.

The session offered an early glimpse into the competitive order for the weekend, while also featuring an unusually large rookie contingent, with seven reserve drivers taking part as teams fulfilled Formula 1's mandatory young driver running requirements.

The one-hour session got underway under sunny skies, but it quickly hit a snag for local favourite Carlos Sainz.

The Williams driver was unable to restart his car in the pit lane and was pushed back to the garage by mechanics. Fortunately for the Spaniard, the issue was resolved swiftly and he returned to the circuit within minutes.

The situation proved more costly on the other side of the Williams garage. Reserve driver Luke Browning never managed to complete a lap after an electrical issue struck Alex Albon's car before he could even leave the pit lane, leaving the Briton sidelined for the entire session.

Meanwhile, Russell wasted little time establishing himself at the front. Running on medium tyres, the Mercedes driver became the first competitor to break into the 1m17s bracket, laying down an early marker despite championship leader Kimi Antonelli watching from the sidelines as reserve driver Fred Vesti took over his car.

    Russell responds to Verstappen challenge

As teams moved onto the soft compound during the second half of the session, the order began to shuffle.

Max Verstappen briefly climbed to the top with a lap of 1m17.047s, although the reigning champion was far from satisfied with the balance of his Red Bull, reporting over team radio: "I don't know what to make of it to be honest."

Moments later, Russell delivered the decisive response. The Mercedes driver found significant time on the softer tyre to record a session-best 1m16.363s, a benchmark that remained unbeaten to the chequered flag.

Piastri finished second despite reporting brake vibrations during the session, while Leclerc secured third for Ferrari.

Verstappen ended the session fourth, ahead of an impressive Leonardo Fornaroli, who took over Lando Norris' McLaren for FP1. Audi reserve Paul Aron completed the top six after a strong showing in Nico Hulkenberg's car.

    Mixed fortunes for rookie drivers

Several rookie drivers made headlines throughout the session.

Cadillac debutant Colton Herta experienced a trip through the gravel after sliding wide at the Turn 7/8 chicane, while Vesti locked up at Turn 1 and took to the run-off area. Gabriel Bortoleto also visited the gravel at Turn 7 before reporting that his Audi felt unstable.

Behind the top six, Liam Lawson, Dino Beganovic, Arvid Lindblad and Franco Colapinto rounded out the top 10.

Further down the order, Pierre Gasly battled a late issue with his Alpine, while the Aston Martins of Fernando Alonso and Lance Stroll endured a difficult session near the bottom of the standings.

With Mercedes showing encouraging pace and several teams still searching for answers, attention now turns to Friday afternoon's FP2 session, where a clearer picture of the competitive order is expected to emerge.
