MECCA — Township officials have scheduled a work session for 4:30 p.m. Monday to discuss a variety of topics, including the possibility of placing a fire levy on a future election ballot.
Assistant Fire Chief Kevin Kuriatnyk said the department currently operates on three levies, with one passed in 1989.
He said the amount they generate is based on when they were first placed on the ballot.
The three levies for the department are a four-year levy passed in 1989 and up for renewal in 2029; a four-year levy passed in 2016 and up for renewal in 2028; and a three-year levy passed in 2021 and up for renewal in 2027.
Kuriatnyk said there is a need for a new levy to generate funds based on current valuation. He recommended a levy for November.
“It is important that we look at the future of the fire department. Sustainability in the future is what is needed. What the levies bring in will not be enough to carry us through in the future,’’ he said.
Trustee Chairman Tom Domes, who is also the fire chief, said if a levy is determined to be needed, there is a need to get things moving.
He said officials will review finances for the fire department.
TOWN HALL
Township officials said there may be a need to redesign and scale back plans for the proposed township hall to be constructed at the township park.
Domes said the plans can be scaled back with alterations made to the designs of the building if costs are too high.
Officials said they have $545,000 available for the building.
Ohio Department of Natural Resources has granted an extension through June 2027 on the reimbursement grant for the town hall.
Trustee Christen Clemson said she will get in contact with State Rep. Nick Santucci, R-Niles, to see if additional funds can be found for the project.
Clemson said she will also get in contact with other communities that had similar buildings constructed to see what costs were involved and who did the work.
Domes said plans are to get the project done this year.
Clemson said work on the building is expected to take 90 days.
In other discussions, resident Tara Gladd said she will seek grants for 2027 for a proposed sensory trail for the township. She said she would like to get public input on such a project.
Gladd said Nature Works grants through the Ohio Department of Natural Resources are available for the project.
She said the trail could be Americans with Disabilities Act compliant for those in wheelchairs or who have mobility problems. There would also be items for activities involving textures, sounds and sights.
Estimated cost is between $60,000 and $87,000 with a local share of 25%.
She said there is also a group known as the Mecca Movement, which has local youth ages 5 and older volunteering their time helping in the community.
Trustee Dan Gladd said a local family wants to put in a rock garden at the park where youth would paint rocks and beautify the park.
Also, Domes said Craig Molnar, who was offered a part-time maintenance position of 32 hours per week for the road department, decided not to take the position due to another full-time job.
He said another candidate, Logan Bingham, will be offered the position.
Also to be discussed at the meeting Monday are cybersecurity with Hudson Communications, job descriptions and the township handbook.
In other business at this week’s meeting, trustees:
• Heard from Domes of plan to remove a hollow tree at Mecca Circle.
• Heard from Domes, a LifePac heart monitor has arrived with training for Mecca and Bazetta firefighters on its use. The equipment will be shared between the two communities,
• Heard from Domes that solar lights will be placed at the park restrooms.
