EAST ROCHESTER, N.Y. — East Rochester has voted to create a registry for short-term rentals within the village.

The decision was made at the village board meeting on Thursday. The registry will include properties like Airbnbs and VRBOs.
The village estimates there are only 10 to 15 short-term rentals in East Rochester at the moment. One village board member says the purpose is to mandate annual safety inspections, getting ahead of any problems before they happen.
“After that, we’d make sure they abided certain rules about noise, lighting, things like that, parking, and making sure it’d be safe for everybody who’d be using it,” said Chad Woodworth, East Rochester Village trustee.
The registry will be made over the course of the next two months. The village asks any owners of short-term rentals within the village to reach out to learn about the upcoming requirements.
Monroe County was considering making a countywide short-term rental registry, but that was shot down late last year. The City of Rochester requires owners obtain a short-term rental permit from the city’s building owner’s registry.
Similarly, the towns of Greece and Irondequoit both require a permit for Airbnbs within each respective town.
