The 5 best places to eat at Chicagos Midway Airport

There once was a reputation for airport food being bad, that the only way to satiate hunger before flights was a turkey sandwich made three weeks ago.

Certainly this reputation is, for the most part, no longer the case.

I’ve traveled to airports in Asia where the food options are Michelin star-caliber. (Search on YouTube for “Singapore airport food” and watch hours of appetizing food travelogues inside Changi airport.) Even stateside, I’ve had great food at the new LaGuardia terminal in New York and some terrific breakfast tacos at Austin’s airport.

So what about Chicago? Honest opinion: We’re getting there. There are the usual fast food options, but some of the city’s finest chefs have opened outposts here. You can experience that same high-level of downtown cooking—with ingredients from local farms—at O’Hare and Midway airports. I even love Tortas Frontera at O’Hare enough to write about it on The New York Times‘ 25 Best Restaurants in Chicago.

Let’s then take a quick tour of both airports, starting first this week at Midway.

Caveat: You are paying inflated prices, nearly double the price compared to its non-airport counterparts. What can you do, pack a lunch?

Beecher’s: I used to work across the street from the original Beecher’s, a cheese shop at Pike Place Market. One day, Oprah Winfrey named its mac-and-cheese her favorite, and the next day, lines stretched around the block. That very mac-and-cheese is served at Midway’s food court. It’s more soupy than creamy, but the cow’s milk cheese imparts a wonderfully nutty flavor to the penne. Big City Chicken: Years ago I wrote about Big City Chicken’s Navy Pier location and was surprised by how great a fried chicken it served. The Lettuce Entertain You concept now has a Midway location, and here they serve boneless chicken strips and sandwiches. The spicy chicken sandwich comes with a Buffalo hot sauce and blue cheese mayo. The Original Mr. Beef: Having achieved national fame on The Bear, Mr. Beef’s Midway location serves the very beef-hot-dipped here (albeit $17) as its Orleans Street location. Do you dare bring a soaked-in-its-jus wet sandwich onto the plane? Triple napkins advised. Billy Goat Tavern: There are other burgers served at Midway, but there’s something about the flattop-seared double patties with thick raw onion rings on bready buns that make Billy Goat Tavern’s burgers singular. Same restrictions apply here: Chips, no fries; no Pepsi, Coke. Arami: The longtime Wicker Park sushi lounge has an outpost here, the benefit being you can watch the sushi chef prepare your maki rolls and nigiri fresh-to-order—and not serve you pre-made sushi rolled at some indeterminate time.
