ROCHESTER, N.Y. – Take measures to stay cool today as heat and humidity will combine to create very uncomfortable and possibly dangerous conditions outdoors. We also anticipate thunder activity this afternoon, mainly south of Ridge Road down towards the Finger Lakes. As such, we have issued a Yellow Alert for your Thursday.
Morning temperature in Rochester was 71 degrees, the record is 72. Dew points are in the upper 60s, making it feel downright soupy out there. Temperatures will climb to the upper 80s early this afternoon, and as humidity stays prevalent, it will make it feel as hot as the mid 90s. That means heat sickness is a real concern if you stay outside for too long without taking proper precautions. Stay hydrated, take frequent breaks in the cool and shade, check on your neighbors, and NEVER leave pets or children in a locked car.
We are also tracking thunderstorms. As a result of the heat and humidity, the atmosphere will be very unstable. When you throw in a lake breeze boundary, the powder keg is lit so to speak, creating thunderstorms east of Lake Erie and south of Lake Ontario. These storms will progress eastward towards the Finger Lakes as we go through the afternoon. There won’t be much wind shear in the atmosphere today; that means storms are unlikely to be severe. But that doesn’t mean there’s nothing to be cautious of: The greatest threats will be heavy downpours, small hail, and a gusty wind just ahead of the rain. The timing for these storms is 3-5pm, give or take an hour.
Tomorrow back to Green as the heat will be less pronounced but still present, and scattered thunder is possible again due to a cold front. Highs will be in the mid 80s and still humid. Showers are possible in the morning, then thunder is possible in the afternoon but chances have decreased since our latest update. No severe weather is expected, but stay tuned for further updates.
