‘It should have been shut down immediately’: Sam Nordquist’s family speaks out as Patty’s Lodge prepares to close for good

HOPEWELL, N.Y. — Patty’s Lodge in Hopewell, where deputies say Sam Nordquist was tortured to death, is set to close for good later this month.

Now, the family of the transgender man is speaking out about the upcoming closure and recent developments in the case. Just last week, Emily Motyka pleaded guilty to murder and kidnapping in the first degree. She is the first of seven people accused in the case to issue a plea.

News10NBC’s Tom Kowalski spoke with Sam’s mother, Linda Nordquist, and his sister, Kayla Nordquist, about the plea and the closure of Patty’s Lodge.

“It was about time,” said Kayla in reference to Patty’s Lodge closing. “Again, they should have closed it immediately when this happened to Sam. But from my understanding, with all the information I’ve gathered from Patty’s Lodge, it should have been shut down several years ago.”

The motel is kicking out all tenants and closing by June 21. Sam Nordquist was tortured to death in Room 22 of the lodge – where guests were still seen living.

“It’s sickening. It makes you want to throw up. To vomit,” Linda Nordquist said.

“I would like to have it demolished, burnt to the ground, flattened over…There’s too much evilness that has happened there. But I would like some kind of forever memorial,” Kayla Nordquist said.

    Motyka’s sentencing

The Ontario County District Attorney said sentencing for Motyka would be somewhere between 15 to 50 years in prison.

“I’m hoping for the 50,” Kayla Nordquist said.

“I’m hoping for the life,” Linda Nordquist said.

Linda Nordquist said she wants the jury to listen to all the evidence and make a rational decision ahead of sentencing.

“I don’t want them to just jump into it and be hasty and be quick about it. Take your time. Read, look at everything if you have to. I want to make sure that they get the the maximum possible sentence that they can get. So I don’t want any quick decisions,” Linda Nordquist said.

The six other suspects face charges for torturing Nordquist to death. Sam’s former partner, Precious Arzuaga, will be the first to go to trial at the end of August.

    Remembering Sam

Sam’s birthday is coming up on June 18. The family says they’re planning to have a small celebration that day with a visit to his grave and a dinner in his memory.
