Chicago Public Schools’ CEO Macquline King faced a grilling from Congress on school policies targeting Black and transgender students on Wednesday.
King faced questions on topics ranging from bathroom policies to a Black student success program during the Republican-led hearing called “Breaking Trust: Attacks on Parental Rights, Inappropriate Content, and Legal Abuses in America’s public schools” in Washington, D.C.
Some of the most heated moments of the day came when downstate Illinois Republican Congresswoman Mary Miller accused King and CPS of allowing the teaching of curriculum surrounding gender and sexuality.
“When will CPS comply with President Trump’s policies banning teaching of sexualized curriculum?” Miller asked at one point.
King responded with a refrain she used numerous times; “We comply with all local, state and federal law.”
Miller and Republicans grilled King on curriculum, transgender bathroom policies and they claimed CPS allowed teachers to keep a student’s gender identity secret from parents — a statement denied by King.
“We do not hide information from parents,” King told Miller.
Miller, however, said proof of her claim was in CPS’ own materials.
A CPS website outlining the system’s guidelines regarding support of transgender and nonbinary students states “all students have a right to privacy. This includes the right to keep their transgender or non-binary identity or gender nonconforming presentation private at school,” but the policies do not mention parents.
Some Democrats on the committee admonished their colleagues for what they called “political theater.”
“I often wonder if you all get tired of divisive bad faith hearings, and the answer is no because it butters your bread,” said Rep. Summer Lee (D-PA).
The hearings come as the U.S. Department of Education withholds $8 million in federal grants to magnet schools because of policies supporting LGBTQ students and a “Black Student Success Program.”
King defended the program during the hearing.
“It is a resource and targeted plan to support students that have been historically and systematically void of opportunities,” King testified.
But Hal Woods – who runs a group called “Kids First” — says the program hasn’t exactly worked as planned despite its good intentions.
“There hasn’t been publicly available data that has revealed successes or targeted investments in the program that have led to success,” Woods told NBC 5.
