Rochester Psychiatric Center to be demolished with $20 million in state funding, Gov. Hochul announces

ROCHESTER, N.Y. — The former Rochester Psychiatric Center is set to be demolished. Gov. Kathy Hochul announced the plan to tear down the building using $20 million in state funding. The tower has been a place for people interested in its history and urban exploration.

News10NBC’s Chris Fortune spoke to an explorer who took video inside the tower. Aiden Bross has found the building intimidating since he was a kid, but it gave him a sense of thrill so he needed to see what’s inside.

He said it’s spooky and there is little light that comes in until you get toward the top floors. The building has been vandalized and broken into over the years and has been vacant since it closed in 1995.

Bross took video exploring the building a few years ago with a friend. The building is mostly empty with debris on the floor, the walls are tattered and there’s graffiti everywhere.

He said it’s about time for the building to come down.

“It’s been standing for quite a while. I actually think it’s probably about time. I mean, it’s falling apart in there and someone’s going to get hurt if it doesn’t happen because kids are going in and out of this building constantly. So and I think it’s, you know, I’m excited to see what you guys do with it. The city does with it. And I think it’ll be cool,” Bross said.

“It’s mixed emotions, to be honest with you. Like, my YouTube channel. I’ve documented this building for years and obviously it’s a big highlight, big point of interest for exploration or urban exploration,” said Davy Vara.

Bross said he has been obsessed with the building for the last decade. He said it feels as though there’s a mystery around it, but he understands how the building could be an eyesore for neighbors.

When the demolition begins, he said he looks forward to documenting it. Hochul said she wants the demolition to happen and that it will create 400 to 500 housing units.

There is no timeline for the demolition yet. But Mayor Malik Evans said we’ll have a better idea after the state funding arrives.
